Mariners add two to Major League roster
Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:
Seattle's 40-man roster is now full at 40 players.
Freitas, 28, made his Major League debut with Atlanta after having his contract purchased from AAA Gwinnett on Aug. 30, 2017. He appeared in 6 games with the Braves, batting .235 (4x17) with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. The 6-foot-2, 240-pound right-handed hitting catcher, spent the majority of the season with Gwinnett, batting .263 (62x236) with 28 runs scored, 13 doubles, 3 home runs, 21 RBI and 25 walks. Freitas threw out 30.2 percent of attempted baserunners (16 CS, 33 SB) and was one of 17 catchers in the International League to throw out at least 30% of baserunners (min. 40 ATT). He signed a minor league contract with Atlanta on Nov. 16, 2016.
The Elk Grove, CA, native has spent 8 minor league seasons with Washington (2010-12), Oakland (2012-13), Baltimore (2014-15), Chicago-NL (2016) and Atlanta (2017), batting .272 (631x2319) with 320 runs scored, 157 doubles, 1 triple, 57 home runs, 336 RBI and 285 walks in 671 games.
Freitas was originally selected by the Washington Nationals in the 15th round over the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Hawaii at Manoa (Honolulu, HI). He was a junior college All-American at Cosumnes River College before transferring to the University of Hawaii after two seasons.
Whalen, 23 (turns 24 on Jan. 31), was placed on the restricted list in July after making his final appearance of the 2017 season in a start with AAA Tacoma on July 5. He went 0-1 with a 6.14 ERA (5 ER, 7.1 IP) with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks in 2 games, including 1 start, with the Mariners in 2017. In 10 starts with the Rainiers in 2017, the 6-foot-2, 225-pound right-hander was 0-7 with a 6.58 ERA (39 ER, 53.1 IP) with 43 strikeouts and 20 walks. He began the season on the 10-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation before being activated and optioned to Tacoma on April 27.
Whalen was acquired by the Mariners along with RHP Max Povse from Atlanta for OF Alex Jackson and a Player to be Named Later (LHP Tyler Pike) on Nov. 28, 2016. In parts of 2 Major League seasons with the Braves (2016) and Mariners (2017-c), he is 1-3 with a 6.47 ERA (23 ER, 32.0 IP) with 27 strikeouts and 14 walks in 7 games, including 6 starts. After being drafted by the New York Mets in the 12th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Haines City (FL) High School, he has compiled a record of 24-24 with a 2.99 ERA (137 ER, 413.0 IP) with 363 strikeouts and 140 walks in 76 games (72 starts) over 6 minor league seasons with the Mets (2012-15), Braves (2015-16) and Mariners (2017-c).
