Mariners recall RHP Parker Markel and RHP David McKay from Triple-A Tacoma

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

Parker Markel, RHP, recalled from AAA Tacoma.

David McKay, RHP, recalled from AAA Tacoma.

Austin Adams, RHP, placed on the 10-day Injured List with a right shoulder strain (retroactive to 7/4).

Dan Altavilla, RHP, placed on the 10-day Injured List with a right forearm strain.

With today’s roster moves, the Mariners Major League, 40-man, roster remains at 39.

Markel (#37) and McKay (#64) will be in uniform and available for tonight's (7:10 pm PT) game vs. Oakland at T-Mobile Park.

Markel, 28, made 4 relief appearances with the Mariners between May 12 and May 20. He allowed 6 earned runs over 3.2 innings (14.73 ERA) while striking out 3 and walking 3. He made his Major League debut on May 12 at Boston. Since his return to AAA Tacoma, he was 1-0, with 4 saves and a 3.94 ERA (7 ER, 16.0 IP) in 12 games. Markel was named as a AAA All-Star. Prior to his selection, he was 3-0 with 4 saves and a 0.52 ERA (1 ER, 17.1 IP) with 35 strikeouts and 7 walks in 13 relief appearances with Double-A Arkansas and Triple-A Tacoma this season. Overall, with Tacoma he was 2-0, 2.81 (8 ER, 25.2 IP) with 7 saves in 20 games this season, and he was 2-0, 0.00 (0 ER, 7.2 IP) with 1 save in 5 games with Arkansas.

Markel was selected by Detroit in the 32nd round of the 2009 MLB Draft but did not sign. The native of Newport Beach, CA, was selected and signed by Tampa Bay in the 39th round of the 2010 Draft out of Yavapai College (Prescott, AZ). He has appeared in parts of 8 minor league seasons with the Rays (2010-16) and Mariners (2019-c). He spent the 2017 season with the Lotte Giants of the Korean Baseball Organization. In 2018, Markel made 37 relief appearances with the Sioux City Explorers of the independent American Association.

McKay, 24, was 0-0, 1.80 (1 ER, 5.0 IP) in 5 games with Seattle May 19-31. He was also on Seattle’s roster March 30-April 1, but did not appear in a game. McKay has spent the majority of the season with the AAA Tacoma Rainiers. In his last 17 games (April 25-July 2) with the Rainiers, McKay was 1-0 with 1 save and a 1.98 ERA (6 ER, 27.1 IP) with 46 strikeouts (15.14 SO per 9.0 IP). Overall with Tacoma this season, McKay was 3-0, 3.76 (16 ER, 38.1 IP) in 24 relief appearances. Eleven of the 16 total runs he allowed this season came in 3 outings (2.2 IP). Discounting those 3 games, he was 3-0, 1.26 (5 ER, 35.2) in 21 games. McKay was 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA (2 ER, 6.0 IP) in 6 Spring Training games with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts.

McKay was originally acquired in a minor league trade with Kansas City on March 20, 2018. He pitched at three levels of the Mariners farm system last season, making stops at High-A Modesto (6 G), Triple-A Tacoma (1 G) and Double-A Arkansas (35 G).

Adams, 28, is 1-1 with 9 holds and a 3.47 ERA (9 ER, 23.1 IP) with 41 strikeouts and 11 walks in 21 appearances (2 starts) with the Mariners. In 19 relief appearances with the Mariners, the 6-for-3, 210-pound, right-hander has posted a 2.49 ERA (6 ER, 21.2 IP) while striking out 39 and walking 9. He was acquired from Washington on May 4 after being designated for assignment by the Nationals on April 30. He was optioned to AAA Tacoma on that day. Adams appeared in 2 games in relief with the Rainiers, allowing 1 hit and striking out 4 over 2.1 scoreless innings. He appeared in 1 game in relief with the Nationals on April 20 at Miami (1.0 IP, 1 ER) during a brief 3-game Major League stint, April 19-22. He began the season with Triple-A Fresno, appearing in 8 games in relief.

Adams was originally selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 8th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of South Florida. He was traded to Washington from Los Angeles in exchange for INF Danny Espinosa on Dec. 10, 2016. Adams made his Major League debut with the Nationals on July 15, 2017 at Cincinnati and in parts of 3 Major League seasons with Washington (2017-19) and Seattle (2019-c), he is 1-1 with a 3.56 ERA (12 ER, 30.1 IP) in 30 appearances (2 starts).

Altavilla, 27, has appeared in 7 games over 3 stints with the Mariners this season (March 19-22, May 12 and June 21-July 5), posting a 9.53 ERA (6 ER, 5.2 IP) with 5 strikeouts and 8 walks. He allowed 2 runs on 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out in 1 in 1.0 inning last night against Oakland. Since being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on June 21, he allowed 3 runs in 5.0 innings over 5 appearances, while striking out 5 and walking 3. In his first 2 stints, he appeared in 2 games, tossing a total of 0.2 innings and being charged with 3 earned runs. He was optioned to AAA Tacoma on March 23 when Seattle’s roster was cut to 25 players. In his first go-round with the Rainiers, he appeared in 5 games (0-0, 11.57), allowing 6 earned runs in 4.2 innings of work prior to being moved to AA Arkansas. With the Travelers, he was 3-0 with 4 saves and a 1.10 ERA (2 ER, 16.1 IP) in 14 games, allowed just 2 hits and 3 walks while striking out 25. After returning to Tacoma on June 9, Dan appeared in 3 games and was 1-0, 5.40 (2 ER, 3.1 IP) with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. Overall, this season at AAA he is 1-0, 9.00 (8 ER, 8.0 IP) in 8 games.

In parts of 4 Major League seasons (2016-2019) with the Mariners, Altavilla is 4-3, 3.69 (35 ER, 85.1 IP) in 85 games, all in relief. In 2018, he was 3-2 with 5 holds and a 2.61 ERA (6 ER, 20.2 IP) with 23 strikeouts and 15 walks in 22 games. He had a pair of injured list stints in 2019: May 1-12 and June 8-Aug. 29.
