Mariners Select LHP Jhonathan Díaz from Triple-A Tacoma
MILWAUKEE – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Justin Hollander announced today the following roster moves:
- Jhonathan Díaz (#74), LHP, selected from Triple-A Tacoma.
- Josh Simpson, LHP, optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.
- Luke Raley, INF/OF, transferred to 60-day Injured List (left forearm strain, retroactive to July 31).
The Mariners 40-man roster remains full.
Díaz, 29, has appeared in 24 games for the Tacoma Rainiers this season, making 23 starts and going 7-9 with a 6.22 ERA (77 ER, 111.1 IP) with 83 strikeouts and 42 walks.
The 6-foot lefty has appeared in parts of 5 Major League seasons with the Angels (2021-23) and Mariners (2024-25), going 2-2 with a 4.66 ERA (24 ER, 46.1 IP), 27 walks and 33 strikeouts over 17 career appearances (7 GS). In 6 career appearances with Seattle (1 GS), he owns a 4.09 ERA (5 ER, 11.0 IP) with 9 strikeouts and 3 walks.
A native of Valencia, Venezuela, Díaz was on the roster for Team Venezuela who won the 2026 World Baseball Classic. He was originally signed by the Boston Red Sox as an international free agent and made his Major League debut with the Angels on Sept. 17, 2021.
Simpson, 29, was recalled on Aug. 2 and made 4 appearances with Seattle during his fourth stint of the season. He has tossed 7.1 innings over 8 total relief appearances for the Mariners in 2026.
In 20 appearances with the Tacoma Rainiers this season, Simpson has posted a 2.08 ERA (5 ER, 21.2 IP) with 1 save, 24 strikeouts and 10 walks.
Simpson was acquired by Seattle on Feb. 16 from the Miami Marlins in exchange for cash considerations. He was drafted by the Marlins in the 32nd round of the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Columbia University (NY) and made 31 relief appearances for Miami in 2025.
Raley, 31, was placed on the 10-day Injured List on Aug. 1. He has appeared in 95 games with the Mariners this season, posting a .723 OPS and 105 OPS+ while batting .225 (59x262) with 28 runs, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 15 home runs, 39 RBI and 15 walks. The left-handed hitting outfielder has appeared in 68 games in right field this season.
Raley was acquired by the Mariners on Jan. 5, 2024 from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for infielder José Caballero. In 305 games with Seattle, he is batting .229 (194x849) with 109 runs, 36 doubles, 3 triples, 41 home runs, 116 RBI, 14 stolen bases and 61 walks with a .732 OPS and 111 OPS+.
The Hinckley, Ohio native was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 7th round of the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Lake Erie College (OH). The 6-foot-3, 235-pounder made his Major League debut with the Dodgers in 2021, also spending time with the Tampa Bay Rays (2022-23).
