Miami Marlins make five selections to conclude 2020 MLB First-Year Player Draft

The Miami Marlins today made five selections, all pitchers, to conclude the 2020 First-Year Player Draft, marking the first year in Club history the Marlins did not select a position player in Draft history. Miami’s first selection on Day 2 was LHP Dax Fulton from Mustang HS (Okla.) in the second round (40th overall).

Fulton, who was selected to play in the Perfect Game All-American Classic, missed the 2020 season due to Tommy John surgery. The southpaw was the consensus top ranked left-handed high school pitcher in the 2020 MLB Draft.

Miami then selected collegiate arms with the following picks: RHP Kyle Nicolas (Ball State University) in Competitive Balance Round B; RHP Zach McCambley (Coastal Carolina University) in the third round; LHP Jake Eder (Vanderbilt University) in the fourth round; and RHP Kyle Hurt (University of Southern California) in the fifth round.

On Day 1 of the 2020 MLB Draft, the Marlins selected RHP Max Meyer from the University of Minnesota with the third overall selection. In a poll by Baseball America of amateur scouts of college players, Meyer was rated the best athlete, his slider was rated the best breaking ball, and his fastball was rated the second best. Meyer joins Hall of Famer Paul Molitor as the highest drafted players from the University of Minnesota; Molitor was selected third by Milwaukee in 1977.

In total, Miami selected six pitchers, four right-handed pitchers and two left-handed pitchers.
