Miami Marlins sign RHP Sergio Romo

MIAMI -- The Miami Marlins today announced that the club has signed right-handed pitcher Sergio Romo to a one-year Major League contract for the 2019 season.
Romo, 35, spent 2018 with the Tampa Bay Rays, posting a 3-4 record with a 4.14 ERA and 25 saves in 73 appearances. He ranked tied for fourth in the American League in appearances, and was 10th with 39 games finished.
He has a 2.86 career ERA in 643 appearances (five starts), with a 1.01 WHIP, 10.11 strikeouts per 9.0 innings (643 total), and a 4.94 strikeout/walk ratio. Since his Major League debut in 2008, he ranks third among all relievers in strikeout/walk ratio, fifth in WHIP, eighth in appearances and strikeouts, and 10th in ERA (min. 463.1 ip).
A native of Brawley, California, Romo spent the first nine years of his 11-year Major League career with the San Francisco Giants, contributing to World Series titles for the club in 2010, '12, and '14. Romo has appeared in 27 postseason games in his career, all with the Giants. He has a 3-1 record, four saves, a 3.09 ERA, and a 0.90 WHIP in those outings.
Romo signed with the Dodgers as a free agent prior to the 2017 season and made 30 appearances before a July trade to Tampa Bay. He posted a 1.47 ERA in 25 outings for the Rays following the trade, including a 0.43 ERA (21.0/1) in his final 17 outings starting August 12, the best mark in the Majors from that date until the end of the season (min. 15.0 ip).
In a corresponding roster move, the Marlins have placed RHP Julian Fernández (recovery from UCL reconstruction surgery) on the 60-day injured list.
