Phillies acquire David Phelps from Brewers

The Phillies have acquired right-handed pitcher David Phelps from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for three players to be named later, the club announced today.

Phelps, 33, has made 12 appearances for the Brewers this year and posted a 2.77 ERA with 20 strikeouts to only two walks. All 12 of his appearances have come in the seventh inning or later. Phelps has faced 48 batters this season, holding opponents to a .156/.208/.289 slash line. He has faced 32 left-handed hitters in 2020 and has struck out 15 of them.

Per MLB Statcast data, Phelps has the lowest average exit velocity allowed of any qualified pitcher in the majors this season at just 80.4 miles per hour on the 25 balls he has allowed in play.

Originally selected by the New York Yankees in the 14th round of the June 2008 draft out of the University of Notre Dame, Phelps appeared in 87 games for the Yankees from 2012-2014 under Joe Girardi.

The Phillies have also reinstated outfielder Jay Bruce and left-handed pitcher Ranger Suárez off the injured list, designated catcher Deivy Grullón and right-handed pitcher Reggie McClain for assignment and placed infielder Scott Kingery on the 10-day IL with back spasms.
