Phillies Add Young to Coaching Staff, Name Kranitz Pitching Coach
The Phillies have added Chris Young as assistant pitching coach to their 2018 major league coaching staff, Manager Gabe Kapler announced today.
Young, 36, joins the Phillies after spending the last three years with the Houston Astros, first as a pro scout from 2015-16 and most recently as MLB scouting supervisor during the 2017 season. Prior to his three seasons with the Astros, Young was a pro scout for the San Diego Padres for five seasons from 2010-14. A former pitcher, Young was selected in the 18th round of the 2002 draft by the Colorado Rockies out of Mississippi State University. In six minor league seasons, Young posted a 3.54 ERA in 266 games (6 starts). He finished his professional career in 2008 as a member of the Camden Riversharks of the Independent Atlantic League.
Additionally, Rick Kranitz has been named pitching coach. Kranitz, who joined the Phillies as bullpen coach prior to the 2016 season, spent last season as assistant pitching coach. In addition to the aforementioned names, the Phillies have hired Jim Gott (bullpen coach), Pedro Guerrero (assistant hitting coach), John Mallee (hitting coach) and Dusty Wathan (third base coach).
