A's acquire RHP Brett Honeywell from Tampa Bay for cash considerations

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland A’s acquired right-handed pitcher Brent Honeywell from the Tampa Bay Rays for cash considerations, the club announced today.

Honeywell made his Major League debut with Tampa Bay in April and had no decisions and an 8.31 ERA in three games, including two starts, before he was optioned to the Rays alternate site on April 24. He spent the balance of the season at Triple-A Durham where he went 5-4 with two saves and a 3.97 ERA in 31 games, including 13 starts. The 26-year-old right-hander was a Competitive Balance Round B pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft and went 36-23 with a 3.06 ERA and .232 opponents batting average in 110 games, including 91 starts, in five seasons in the Rays farm system. Honeywell did not pitch from 2018-20 following four surgeries on his elbow, including “Tommy John” surgery in 2018. Prior to his first surgery, he was the Rays No. 2 prospect and 23rd overall in the minors according to Baseball America.
