D-backs agree to terms with Mark Melancon on a 2-year contract
The Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to terms with RHP Mark Melancon (muh-LAN-son) on a 2-year contract with a mutual option for 2024.
Is a 4-time NL All-Star (2013, ’15-16, ’21) and led the Major Leagues in saves on 2 occasions (51 in 2015 and 39 in ’21).
Ranks fourth among all active pitchers with 244 saves, trailing Craig Kimbrel (372), Kenley Jansen (350) and Aroldis Chapman (306).
Named the MLB.com Setup Man of the Year in 2013 and the Trevor Hoffman NL Reliever of the Year in 2015.
Was 4-3 with 39 saves, a 2.23 ERA (16 ER in 64.2 IP), 1.22 WHIP and a .228 opponent average in 64 appearances with the Padres in 2021…also converted all 18 save opportunities vs. NL West opponents.
In 13 Major League seasons, has gone 34-30 with 244 saves, a 2.79 ERA (208 ER in 670.2 IP) and 608 strikeouts in 670 games with the Yankees (2009-10), Astros (2010-11), Red Sox (2012), Pirates (2013-16), Nationals (2016), Giants (2017-19), Braves (2019-20) and Padres (2021).
Attended the University of Arizona from 2004-06.
