Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves named the National League Player of the Month for September; José Ramírez of the Cleveland Indians named the American League Player of the Month for September

All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves has been voted the National League Player of the Month for September, and All-Star third baseman José Ramírez of the Cleveland Indians has been named the American League Player of the Month for September. The announcements were made earlier today on MLB Network.

Freeman earned his second career monthly award and is the first Braves winner since his previous honor in September 2016. Justin Upton was the last Braves player other than Freddie to accomplish the feat, doing so in April 2013. Ramírez was similarly awarded his second career AL Player of the Month Award, and is the first Indians winner since his first honor in July 2018. The last Tribe player other than José to win Player of the Month is his All-Star teammate Francisco Lindor, who took home monthly honors in May 2018.

• Posted a slash line of .375/.496/.750 with 24 runs scored, 36 hits, 12 doubles, eight home runs, 32 RBI and 20 walks over 26 games played.

• Finished his excellent 2020 season with 23 doubles, the most by any Atlanta-era player (since 1966) through the first 60 games of a season. Notched a pair of doubles on September 18th en route to reaching 339 for his career. Passed Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews (338) for third on the franchise’s all-time list and trails only Hall of Famers Hank Aaron (600) and Chipper Jones (549).

• Posted a 33-game on-base streak from August 11th-September 18th, the longest of any player in the Majors this season. Included a 12-game hitting streak from September 6th-18th.

• Became just the second player in franchise history to bat at least .375 with 20-or-more extra-base hits in a month, joining Aaron (July 1956). Was the first Major Leaguer to accomplish the feat since Alex Bregman of the Houston Astros in August 2019.

• Batted .366 (30-for-82) with 18 runs scored, nine doubles, 10 home runs, 24 RBI, 11 walks and a .841 slugging percentage across 23 games.

• On his 28th birthday on September 17th, went 4-for-5 with a double, two home runs, four RBI and two runs scored. Became the sixth player in team history to post a multi-homer game on his birthday, and the fifth to record three-or-more extra-base hits on his birthday.

• Launched his team-leading 17th home run of the season in Tuesday night’s game. Became the second player in Baseball history to club a walk-off three-run homer (or grand slam) while trailing to clinch a Postseason berth for his team, joining San Francisco’s Bobby Thomson in 1951.

• Became the sixth player in Club history to bat .365-or-better with at least nine doubles and 10 home runs in a month, joining Lindor (May 2018), Manny Ramirez (September/October 2000), Albert Belle (August 1995), Jeff Heath (September/October 1938) and Hal Trosky (July 1936).

Others receiving votes for NL Player of the Month included All-Star outfielder Mookie Betts (.284, 20 R, 25 H, 4 SB) of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Freddie’s All-Star teammates Ronald Acuña Jr. (30 R, 19 H, 9 HR, 19 RBI), Adam Duvall (20 R, 23 H, 11 HR, 20 RBI) and Marcell Ozuna (.394, 41 H, 10 HR, 33 RBI).

Others receiving votes for AL Player of the Month included September’s Rookie of the Month Jared Walsh (.337, 18 R, 15 XBH, 9 HR) of the Los Angeles Angels and All-Star infielder DJ LeMahieu (.336, 24 R, 9 2B, 8 HR) of the New York Yankees.
