Pirates select Austin Brice from Triple-A Indianapolis; designate Jerad Eickhoff for assignment

The Pittsburgh Pirates today selected right-handed pitcher Austin Brice from Triple-A Indianapolis. To make room on both the 26-and 40-man rosters, the club designated right-handed pitcher Jerad Eickhoff for assignment. The 40-man roster remains at 40.

Brice, 30, will be making his Pirates debut and will wear uniform No. 70. The six-foot-four, 240-pounder has gone 2-2 with 5 saves, a 3.04 ERA (9 ER in 26.2 IP), 31 strikeouts and 11 walks in 24 relief appearances for Indianapolis this season, including limiting right-handed hitters to a .197 batting average. He has combined to go 4-4 with a 5.17 ERA (93 ER in 162.0 IP) with 155 strikeouts against 63 walks in 140 games (1 start) across parts of six Major League seasons with the Marlins (2016, ‘19), Reds (2017-18) and Red Sox (2020-21). Brice holds the distinction of being the first and only Major League player to be born in Hong Kong.

Eickhoff, 31, made his lone appearance with the Pirates on Wednesday in a start vs. the Cubs, taking the loss after allowing 10 runs in 4.1 innings pitched.
