Red Sox claim infielder/outfielder Romy Gonzalez off waivers from Chicago White Sox
BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today claimed infielder/outfielder Romy Gonzalez off waivers from the Chicago White Sox. To make room on the 40-man roster, the club designated right-handed pitcher Zack Weiss for assignment.
Gonzalez, 27, has played in 86 career games with the White Sox (2021-23), making 46 starts at second base, seven in right field, four at shortstop, three at third base, and three in left field. The right-handed hitter has batted .222 (51-for-230) with 11 doubles, three triples, five home runs, and seven stolen bases. In 2023, Gonzalez played 44 games with the White Sox before being placed on the Injured List on July 2 due to right shoulder inflammation. The Florida native was originally selected by the White Sox in the 18th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Miami.
Weiss, 31, was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels on August 25, 2023, and pitched in 12 games for Boston, recording a 3.21 ERA (5 ER/14.0 IP) with 15 strikeouts. The right-hander also made six appearances for the Angels during 2023, allowing three runs in 5.1 innings, and posted a 5.44 ERA (25 ER/41.1 IP) in 34 Triple-A games with Salt Lake (30 games) and Worcester (four games). Originally selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the sixth round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, the California native owns a 4.61 ERA (14 ER/27.1 IP) in 25 career Major League games with Cincinnati (2018), Los Angeles (2022-23), and Boston (2023).
