Red Sox Place infielder/outfielder Kiké Hernández on the 10-day injured list

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today placed infielder/outfielder Kiké Hernández on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain. To fill Hernández’s spot on the active roster, the club recalled infielder/outfielder Michael Chavis from Triple-A Worcester.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Hernández, 29, was removed from yesterday’s game in the first inning after beginning the Red Sox’ half of the frame with a double. He is batting .239 (27-for-113) with four home runs, 10 RBI, and a .723 OPS in 30 games this season, making 21 starts in center field and six at second base. Hernández is slugging .516 in his last 17 games, and is 4-for-12 with three RBI, three walks and one hit by pitch during his current four-game hitting streak.

Chavis, 25, is 1-for-7 with a double in two games for Worcester this season. He has also appeared in one game for Boston this season, serving as a pinch runner in the 10th inning and scoring the game-winning run in the Red Sox’ 6-4 victory at Camden Yards on April 10. In 137 career major league games, Chavis has hit .241 (119-for-493) with 23 home runs and 77 RBI. He has started 64 games at first base, 47 at second base, 11 in left field, and two at third base.
