Red Sox add first baseman/outfielder Garrett Cooper to active Major League roster

Club Designates Infielder/Outfielder Pablo Reyes for Assignment

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today added first baseman/outfielder Garrett Cooper to the active Major League roster. To make room, Boston designated infielder/outfielder Pablo Reyes for assignment.

Cooper, 33, was acquired from the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, in exchange for cash considerations. The right-handed hitter has batted .270 (10-for-37) with a .773 OPS, one double, one triple, one home run, six RBI, and four walks in 12 games with the Cubs this season. Selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the sixth round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, the California native has hit .268 (447-for-1,665) with a .772 OPS, 57 home runs, and 228 RBI in 493 career games with the New York Yankees (2017), Miami Marlins (2018-23), San Diego Padres (2023), and Cubs (2024). The 2022 National League All-Star has made 245 career starts at first base, 115 as the designated hitter, 73 in right field, and three in left field.

Reyes, 30, has played in 21 games this season, making nine starts at third base, four at second base, one at shortstop, and one at first base while batting .183 (11-for-60) with two doubles and five RBI. Originally signed as an international free agent by the Pittsburgh Pirates in May 2012, the Dominican Republic native has hit .248 (129-for-521) with eight home runs in 233 career games with the Pirates (2018-19), Milwaukee Brewers (2021-22), and Red Sox (2023-24).
