Red Sox Place Left-Handed Pitcher David Price on Paternity Leave List

BRONX, NY – Prior to tonight’s game against the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox placed left-handed pitcher David Price on the paternity leave list. To fill Price’s spot on the 25-man roster, the club recalled infielder Marco Hernández from Triple-A Pawtucket.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Price, 33, is 7-4 with a 3.86 ERA (44 ER/102.2 IP) in 20 starts for Boston this season. He reached 10 years of major league service time earlier this season and earned his 150th career win on July 7 at Detroit, as he is 150-79 (.655) with a 3.28 ERA (739 ER/2,025.0 IP) in 319 career appearances (309 starts) with Tampa Bay (2008-14), Detroit (2014-15), Toronto (2015), and Boston (2016-19). In 101 regular season outings with the Red Sox (96 starts), Price is 46-23 (.667) with a 3.76 ERA (244 ER/583.1 IP). He also earned three wins in the 2018 Postseason, including in the clinching games of the American League Championship Series and World Series.

Hernández, 26, has hit .339 (21-for-62) with two home runs in 27 major league games this season, with all 12 of his starts coming at second base. After being optioned to Pawtucket on July 23 he appeared in eight games with the PawSox and batted .400 (14-for-35). Acquired from the Cubs in 2014, Hernández has played in 88 career games for Boston, batting .304 (52-for-171) while making 19 starts at second base, 15 at third base, and six at shortstop. He missed the majority of the 2017 season and all of 2018 recovering from left shoulder surgery.
