White Sox acquire pitchers Steven Wilson, Jairo Iriarte and Drew Thorpe and outfielder Samuel Zavala from San Diego in exchange for pitcher Dylan Cease
GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Chicago White Sox have acquired right-handed pitchers Drew Thorpe, Jairo Iriarte (“EAR-ee-ARE-tay”) and Steven Wilson and outfielder Samuel Zavala from the San Diego Padres in exchange for right-hander Dylan Cease. Thorpe (No. 5), Zavala (No. 7) and Iriarte (No. 8) are rated by MLB.com among the Top 10 prospects in the Padres organization.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the White Sox designated outfielder Peyton Burdick for assignment.
Thorpe, 23, is rated by MLB.com as the No. 85 overall prospect in baseball. He was acquired by the Padres with right-handers Michael King, Jhony Brito and Randy Vásquez and catcher Kyle Higashioka from the Yankees in exchange for outfielders Juan Soto and Trent Grisham on December 6, 2023.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Thorpe went 14-2 with a 2.52 ERA (39 ER/139.1 IP), 182 strikeouts (11.75 per 9.0 IP) and a 0.98 WHIP in 23 starts with Class A Hudson Valley and Class AA Somerset in the Yankees system in 2023. He led all Yankees minor-league pitchers in wins, ERA and strikeouts, and was named MiLB.com Pitching Prospect of the Year. Thorpe also earned All-Prospect First-Team honors, Baseball America Minor League All-Star recognition and Pitcher of the Month honors in the South Atlantic League (June) and Eastern League (August).
Thorpe originally was selected by New York-AL in the second round of the June 2022 First-Year Player Draft out of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. In 2022, he was one of five collegiate finalists for National Pitcher of the Year and was a semifinalist for both the Dick Howser Trophy and Golden Spikes Award.
Wilson, 29, went 1-2 with a 3.91 ERA (23 ER/53.0 IP), .185 (35-189) opponents average, 22 holds and 57 strikeouts (9.7 per 9.0 IP) over 52 relief appearances with the Padres last season. He ranked 10th among National League relievers in holds and 11th in opponents average. Wilson held opponents to a .192 (10-52) average with RISP, righties to a .184 (21-114) mark and left-handers to a .187 (14-75) average in 2023.
The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Wilson has gone 5-4 with a 3.48 ERA (41 ER/106.0 IP), .188 (71-377) opponents average, 27 holds, one save and 110 strikeouts in 102 career games (one start) over two major-league seasons with San Diego. He has limited right-handed hitters to a .179 (42-234) average in his career. Wilson, a native of Littleton, Colo., was selected by the Padres in the eighth round of the 2018 draft out of Santa Clara (Calif.) University.
Iriarte, 22, combined to go 3-4 with a 3.49 ERA (35 ER/90.1 IP), 128 strikeouts (12.8 per 9.0 IP) and a .216 (71-329) opponents average in 27 games (21 starts) last season between Class A Fort Wayne and Class AA San Antonio. He began the season at Fort Wayne and was named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 21. Iriarte averaged 15.6 strikeouts per 9.0 IP in his 13 outings (seven starts) with San Antonio after being promoted from Fort Wayne on July 14.
Iriarte, a native of La Guaira, Venezuela, originally was signed by the Padres as an international free agent on July 2, 2018.
Zavala, 19, spent most of the 2023 season at Class A Lake Elsinore as an 18-year-old, hitting .267/.420/.451 (93-348) with 22 doubles, 14 homers, 71 RBI, 83 runs scored and 20 stolen bases.
Zavala, a 6-foot-1, 185 pound native of Caracas, Venezuela, is a career 263/.389/.452 (196-745) hitter with 48 doubles, nine triples, 25 home runs and 149 RBI in 213 minor-league games in the Padres system. He originally was signed as an international free agent on January 15, 2021 for a $1.2 million bonus.
Cease, 28, went 7-9 with a 4.58 ERA (90 ER/177.0 IP) and 214 strikeouts over 33 starts last season, his fifth with the White Sox. He finished second in the 2022 American League Cy Young Award voting in 2022 after going 14-8 with a 2.20 ERA (45 ER/184.0 IP) and 227 strikeouts over 32 starts.
Cease was acquired from the Cubs on July 13, 2017 as part of a five-player deal that included outfielder/designated hitter Eloy Jiménez in exchange for left-hander José Quintana.
Burdick, 27, was acquired by the Sox off waivers from Baltimore on February 23.
