White Sox Place Kelvin Herrera On Injured List And Recall Jimmy Cordero From Class AAA Charlotte
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Prior to tonight’s game at Tampa Bay, the Chicago White Sox placed right-handed pitcher Kelvin Herrera on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to July 18) with a right oblique strain and recalled right-hander Jimmy Cordero from Class AAA Charlotte.
Cordero, 28, has gone 3-1 with a 0.51 ERA (1 ER/17.2 IP), 0.91 WHIP, .215 opponents average (14-65), four saves and 14 strikeouts in 13 relief appearances with Charlotte. The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Cordero was claimed by the White Sox off waivers from Seattle on June 7.
A native of San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic, Cordero opened the season in the Washington organization before being claimed off waivers by Toronto on May 15 and the Mariners on May 27. He made a combined 14 appearances with Class AAA Fresno (Washington), Class AAA Buffalo (Toronto) and Class AA Arkansas (Seattle) to start 2019. Cordero appeared in one game with the Blue Jays on May 22 vs. Boston, suffering the loss when he allowed one run over 1.1 IP.
Cordero, who will wear uniform No. 60, is 1-3 with a 5.75 ERA (14 ER/20.1 IP) and 12 strikeouts in 23 career relief appearances with the Nationals (2018) and Blue Jays (2019).
Herrera, 29, is 3-3 with a 7.36 ERA (27 ER/33.0 IP), six holds and 31 strikeouts in 38 relief appearances this season, his first with the White Sox.
