Rangers claim LHP Surkamp on waivers from Oakland; option him to AAA Round Rock
The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has received left-handed pitcher Eric Surkamp on a waiver claim from the Oakland A's. Surkamp has been optioned to Triple-A Round Rock of the Pacific Coast League.
To make room for Surkamp on the 40-man roster, outfielder Drew Stubbs has been transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.
Surkamp, 28, is 0-5, 6.98 (38.2 IP, 55 H, 32 R, 30 ER, 21 BB, 22 SO) in nine starts over four different stints with the A's this season (April 8-25; May 11-16; May 31-June 2; June 14-25). He was designated for assignment by Oakland on June 27. Surkamp was 3-1, 3.07 in five starts at Triple-A Nashville this season. He was signed as a minor league free agent by Oakland in December 2015.
Surkamp is 4-8, 6.68 in 52 games/16 starts in his major league career with the Giants, White Sox, Dodgers, and A's.
Stubbs was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 7 with a sprain of his left small toe. He has split 2016 between Atlanta and Texas, hitting .245 with two homers and five RBI in 30 games.
With today's moves, the Rangers' major league roster remains at 40 players.
