Red Sox select three players on day two of 2020 June draft

The Boston Red Sox tonight concluded their participation in Major League Baseball’s 2020 First-Year Player Draft with three additional selections in rounds three, four, and five.

Red Sox Director of Amateur Scouting Paul Toboni made the announcement.

Yesterday, the Red Sox selected second baseman Nick Yorke out of Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, CA, with their first pick (1st round, 17th overall) in the draft.

With their first pick tonight, 89th overall in the third round, the Red Sox selected third baseman Blaze Jordan out of DeSoto Central High School in Southaven, MS. Ranked by Baseball America as the No. 90 prospect in this year’s draft, he was named the 2019-20 Gatorade Mississippi Baseball Player of the Year after batting .422 (19-for-45) with six doubles, five triples, four RBI, and 14 runs scored in 13 games this season. The six-foot-two, 220-pound right-handed hitter was a two-time First Team All-State selection, batting .440 (131-for-298) with a 1.308 OPS, 33 doubles, six triples, 19 home runs and 98 RBI in 100 games during his four-year varsity career, helping lead DeSoto Central to a 34-3 record and state championship in 2019. He won the 2019 High School Home Run Derby at Progressive Field in Cleveland during MLB All-Star Week and had committed to play baseball at Mississippi State University.

In the fourth round, with the 118th overall pick, the Red Sox selected left-handed pitcher Jeremy Wu-Yelland out of the University of Hawaii. The six-foot-two, 210-pound left-hander went 1-1 with a 0.69 ERA (1 ER/13.0 IP), 16 strikeouts, and five walks over seven relief appearances in 2020, including 4.0 scoreless innings on March 1 at Vanderbilt University. The Spokane, WA, native made 40 appearances (eight starts) during his three-year career at Hawaii, going 4-8 with a 4.67 ERA (46 ER/88.2 IP), 92 strikeouts, and a .228 opponent batting average. Wu-Yelland also pitched for the Chatham Anglers of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2019, making the second-most appearances on the team (10) while going 2-1 with a 3.16 ERA (9 ER/25.2 IP) and 26 strikeouts.

With their final selection tonight, 148th overall in the fifth round, the Red Sox selected left-handed pitcher Shane Drohan out of Florida State University. The six-foot-three, 195-pound left-hander made four relief appearances this season, posting a 4.08 ERA (8 ER/17.2 IP) with 27 strikeouts. Over 26 career outings (15 starts) during his three-year career at Florida State, the West Palm Beach, FL, native went 4-2 with a 4.76 ERA (39 ER/73.2 IP) and 99 strikeouts. Selected in the 23rd round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies, Drohan also pitched for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2019. His father, Bill Drohan, pitched within the Kansas City Royals system for four seasons from 1987-90.
