Adam called up as Reid-Foley is optioned

LOS ANGELES -- The Blue Jays used seven pitchers -- including position player Richard Ureña -- in Tuesday’s 16-3 loss to the Dodgers. With a bullpen game already planned for Wednesday, Toronto was forced to bring in a fresh relief arm, calling up right-hander Jason Adam from Triple-A Buffalo.

Manager Charlie Montoyo used Adam to pitch the ninth inning of Wednesday night's 2-1 loss, holding the Dodgers scoreless and forcing extra innings. Adam, 28, made his Blue Jays debut on Aug. 1 and has allowed one run across five relief appearances (seven innings pitched). He most recently pitched for Buffalo on Aug. 18, when he threw a scoreless frame on 13 pitches.

Sean Reid-Foley, who was Tuesday’s planned “bulk” pitcher but lasted only 1 2/3 innings, was optioned to Buffalo as the corresponding move.

“He’s got to command his pitches,” Montoyo said of Reid-Foley, who has issued 21 walks in 31 2/3 innings with the Blue Jays this season. “He’s got the stuff to pitch in the big leagues and all that, but you've got to command.”

Reid-Foley will not be eligible to return to the club for 10 days, while Thomas Pannone was optioned to Triple-A on Monday, leaving the Blue Jays with just two starting pitchers on their 25-man roster in Trent Thornton and Jacob Waguespack. Montoyo listed Brock Stewart as an option to pitch in Pannone’s rotation spot on Saturday in Seattle, but did not yet know who might go in place of Reid-Foley on Sunday.

Vlad Jr. sits again

Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who played Tuesday after sitting on Sunday with left knee inflammation, was out of the Blue Jays’ lineup on Wednesday.

“Because he missed time for the knee, we've got to be careful playing him on back-to-back days,” said Montoyo. “That’s the only reason he’s not playing today.”

Montoyo emphasized that the rookie had not experienced a setback with the injury, and was available to pinch-hit, which he did in the eighth before taking over at third base. He went 0-for-1 with a two-out walk in the 10th, at which point he was replaced by a pinch-runner.

Bergen back in organization

Left-hander Travis Bergen has been returned to the Blue Jays’ organization by the Giants. San Francisco claimed Bergen, a seventh-round Draft pick of the Blue Jays in 2015, off waivers in December, then designated him for assignment on Aug. 18.

Bergen, 25, made his Major League debut with the Giants this season and had a 5.49 ERA in 21 relief appearances. He will report to Buffalo.
