ST. LOUIS -- Connor Brogdon did everything he could to keep the game from unraveling Wednesday in St. Louis.
After allowing back-to-back singles to open the sixth inning of the Guardians' 5-3 loss, Brogdon charged a sacrifice bunt from Pedro Pagés that rolled toward the mound. But as he fielded it, his footing gave way on the rain-soaked grass, sending him to the ground.
From there, it turned into improvisation.
Falling onto his backside, Brogdon still managed to fire a throw to first base, where second baseman Juan Brito -- covering on the play -- made a difficult backhanded pick to secure the out. It was a chaotic sequence that, for a moment, kept the game tied and limited the immediate damage.
Both runners would eventually come around to score later in the inning to break a 1-1 tie, but Brogdon’s effort stood out -- a heads-up, instinctive play in tough conditions that salvaged an out when it easily could have turned into more.
