Mariners' Santana (elbow inflammation) to IL

The Mariners placed outfielder Domingo Santana on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Monday, with right elbow inflammation and selected the contract of outfielder Jake Fraley from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday.

Fraley (#8) will be in uniform and available for today’s (4:10 pm PT) game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. Fraley will be making his Major League debut with his first appearance.

Seattle’s Major League, 40-man, roster is now at 38 players.

Fraley, 24, is the Mariners No. 8 prospect according to MLB.com and the club’s No. 12 prospect according to Baseball America. In 38 games with Triple-A Tacoma this season, Fraley hit .276 (42x152) with 28 runs, 12 doubles, 3 triples, 8 home runs and 33 RBI. The 6-foot, 195-pound outfielder has hit safely in 12 of his last 16 games, batting .317 (19x60) with 10 runs, 8 doubles, 3 home runs and 12 RBI. The left-handed hitter was promoted to Tacoma on June 20. He began the year with Double-A Arkansas, where he hit .313 (72x230) with 40 runs, 15 doubles, 2 triples, 11 home runs, 47 RBI, 23 walks and 16 stolen bases in 61 games.

Fraley was acquired by the Mariners from Tampa Bay, along with Mallex Smith (of), in exchange for Mike Zunino (c), Guillermo Heredia (of) and Michael Plassmeyer (lhp) on Nov. 8, 2018. He spent the 2018 season with the Charlotte Stone Crabs of the High-A Florida State League, batting .347 (78x225) with 19 doubles, 7 triples, 4 home runs, 41 RBI and a .962 OPS (.415 OBP/.547 SLG) in 66 games.

Fraley was originally selected by the Rays in the 2nd round of the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of LSU. In 4 minor league seasons with the Rays (2016-18) and Mariners (2019-c), he is batting .286 (264x922) with 153 runs, 61 doubles, 20 triples, 26 home runs, 153 RBI and 70 stolen bases in 250 career games.

Santana, 27, left the game on July 23 vs. Texas with right elbow soreness. Since July 24, he has appeared exclusively as a designated hitter, batting .122 (6x49) with 7 runs scored, 1 double, 2 home runs, 4 RBI, 9 walks and 2 stolen bases during that span. Overall this season, he is batting .256 (113x441) with 63 runs scored, 20 doubles, 1 triple, 21 home runs, 69 RBI, 2 HBP, 49 walks, 8 stolen bases, a .332 on-base percentage and a .449 slugging percentage (.781 OPS) in 115 games.

Santana was acquired by the Mariners from the Milwaukee Brewers on December 21, 2018 in exchange for outfielder Ben Gamel and minor league right-hander Noah Zavolas. In parts of 6 Major League seasons with Houston (2014-15), Milwaukee (2015-18) and Seattle (2019-c), he is a career .260 (416x1600) hitter with 227 runs scored, 84 doubles, 2 triples, 75 home runs, 232 RBI, 195 walks, 30 stolen bases and a .800 OPS (.344 OBP, .446 SLG) in 486 career games. He was originally signed by Philadelphia as an international free agent in 2009 out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He was traded to Houston in 2011 and made his MLB debut with the Astros in 2014, prior to being traded to Milwaukee in 2015.
