Is this the first time a player had the game's date on the back of his jersey?

If you watched the Cardinals and Dodgers series finale on Sunday, you would have seen Dustin May -- a former Dodger himself who received a World Series ring pregame -- navigate through traffic to complete six quality innings.

He did so while donning the No. 3 on his uniform, this being the first time he’s worn the number in his career after featuring No. 85 in his first nine years. Coincidentally, Sunday’s date was … May 3.

So, Dustin May pitched on May 3 with May 3 on his uniform. Insane, right?

We all love improbable baseball happenings like this one. But this is not the only time it’s happened! In fact, it happened twice on the same day back in 1968.

While not an exhaustive list, here are a few other former Major Leaguers who stepped foot on the diamond with the date literally featured on the back of their jersey. You might not be surprised to learn that the only players meeting this qualification have the last name “May.”

Lee May, 1B/OF, 1965-1982

This May most frequently took the field matching the day’s date, doing so 10 times with the Reds (three times), Astros (two) and Orioles (five).

May went 8-for-41 with one home run and one double on days that his uniform mirrored the calendar. He split it across May 23 and May 14, with the former generally his more productive day. May 23, 1970, was a particularly strong performance; he went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in a 14-3 win over the Astros.

Milt May, C, 1970-1984

Milt slotted in just behind Lee for this list, wearing the date nine times in his 15-season career. He accomplished that with four different clubs and four different uniform numbers.

Interestingly, May never repeated a jersey number across his different teams. He made our list with the Pirates by wearing May 29, the Astros on May 8, the Tigers on May 12 and the Giants on May 7.

In total, May went 7-for-28 with a homer, a double and four RBIs. But May 7 with the Giants was probably circled on his calendar by the end of his time in the bigs, having collected four hits in four games on the date.

Jerry May, C, 1964-1973

Playing for the Pirates, Royals and Mets in his 10-year career, May donned No. 12 for most of his career. He played on May 12 four times, thrice with the Pirates and once for Kansas City.

The date wasn’t particularly kind to him, as he went 2-for-10 with a walk.

Dave May, OF, 1967-1978

Once an All-Star with the Brewers, Dave joined Jerry as the aforementioned duo to wear the date on their uniform on the SAME day. That was May 12, 1968, when the duo combined to go 1-for-10 at the plate (Dave played in a doubleheader, both losses for his Orioles).

Dave May matched the calendar only two other times in his career, wearing May 11 for the Brewers in 1973 and 1974. He enjoyed a 3-for-5 mark with a home run and a pair of RBIs between those two days.

Honorable mention

We came oh-so-close to not having this list exclusively feature Mays, as Don August pitched in four seasons for the Brewers from 1988-1991. Unfortunately, he wore No. 38.

There was also June Greene, who doesn’t technically qualify since his first name is the month instead of his last, but he also didn’t have a uniform number during the 1928 and 1929 season with the Phillies.

And finally, if we wanted to expand the list to days and not just dates, former All-Star Rick Monday probably had some pretty good Mondays while wearing Nos. 28, 7 and 16. Grier Friday also cracked the big leagues with the Nationals in 1923, he just didn’t have a uniform number.
