Indians trade for righty bullpen arm Goody

CLEVELAND -- The Indians added another arm to their spring bullpen competition on Tuesday, acquiring right-hander Nick Goody from the Yankees.
New York, which designated Goody for assignment on Thursday following the signing of free-agent closer Aroldis Chapman, will receive a player to be named or cash considerations for Goody, whose arrival puts the Tribe's 40-man roster at capacity. Cleveland is required to complete the compensation element of the trade by May 5.
Goody will head to Spring Training to compete with an assortment of arms who will be vying for the two or three openings in Cleveland's bullpen. As things currently stand, the Indians project to have relief ace Andrew Miller, closer Cody Allen, setup man Bryan Shaw and righties Dan Otero and Zach McAllister. Manager Terry Francona has utilized an eight-man bullpen often throughout his time with the Tribe.

Beyond Goody, the current crop of competitors includes Austin Adams (out of Minor League options), Shawn Armstrong, Joe Colon, Tim Cooney, Kyle Crockett, Edwin Escobar (out of Minor League options), Perci Garner and Hoby Milner (Rule 5 Draft selection). Mike Clevinger, Cody Anderson, Ryan Merritt, Shawn Morimando and Adam Plutko are also on the roster, but all five are starting pitchers by trade.
Goody has one Minor League option left, meaning he can be sent to Triple-A without being exposed to waivers.
Goody, 25, features a fastball-slider mix and averaged 91.8 mph with his four-seamer in his time with the Yankees last season. Over 34 career games in the big leagues between the 2015-16 seasons, the righty has turned in a 4.67 ERA with 37 strikeouts and 15 walks in 34 2/3 innings. He posted a 4.66 ERA in 27 appearances in '16 for New York. For his Major League career, Goody has limited righty batters to a .205 average (73 at-bats), compared to a .357 mark (40 at-bats) for lefties.
A sixth-round pick by the Yankees in the 2012 Draft, Goody has a much stronger track record in the Minors. Over 113 appearances, the reliever has averaged 13 strikeouts per nine innings with a 4.3 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Goody has 220 strikeouts against 51 walks, along with a 2.19 ERA, in 152 career Minor League innings. Last year, he had a 1.93 ERA with 35 strikeouts and four walks in 23 1/3 innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
