Angels place Ramirez, Bailey on 10-day DL

ANAHEIM -- Just as the Angels' rotation appeared to be getting healthier, the club was dealt yet another injury blow, as JC Ramirez landed on the 10-day disabled list Monday with a right elbow strain.
Ramirez exited his start against the Orioles on Saturday with what was initially described as right forearm irritation and underwent an MRI exam on Monday, which uncovered the elbow injury. The Angels did not offer a potential timetable for his return, though manager Mike Scioscia said Ramirez will "have to be shut down for a while."
Ramirez is in his first full season as a starter after spending the first three years of his Major League career working exclusively out of the bullpen. The 29-year-old right-hander logged a 4.15 ERA over 147 1/3 innings this season for the Angels, far exceeding his previous career-high of 78 2/3 innings in 2016.
Asked to what extent Ramirez's injury could be related to his increased workload, Scioscia said, "You never know where a guy is and if there's an endpoint somewhere, but he had rebounded from every start very well. He really had no issues along these lines, and we monitored it very closely. He's been doing his routine, doing his work. His bullpens have been good. It's hard to say exactly what the cause is, but right now we're going to have to just deal with it."
The Angels have welcomed left-handers Tyler Skaggs and Andrew Heaney back to their rotation this month after extended absences, but several of their starters remain sidelined. Ramirez became the fifth Halos starter to land on the disabled list, joining Garrett Richards, Alex Meyer, Matt Shoemaker and Nick Tropeano.
Scioscia said the Angels have yet to decide who will replace Ramirez in the rotation on Thursday against the Rangers, though Jesse Chavez and Troy Scribner are likely candidates to fill the void.
In a corresponding roster move, the Angels activated Skaggs from the bereavement list ahead of his start against Texas on Monday night. Skaggs briefly left the team over the weekend to attend his grandfather's funeral.
The Angels also placed Andrew Bailey on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain on Monday and recalled left-hander José Álvarez to take his spot on the roster. Bailey missed more than four months with shoulder inflammation earlier this season, but he returned on Aug. 12 and made one appearance for the Angels before the issue resurfaced. Bailey, 33, has pitched only four innings for the Halos this year.
"Andrew has worked extremely hard, and when he's been healthy, he's throwing the ball well," Scioscia said. "Something just cropped back into his shoulder. We'll take a look at it and see where he is."
Worth noting
• Cameron Maybin, who had not started the last four games due to right knee discomfort, was back in the Angels' lineup on Monday, batting leadoff and playing left field.
• Yunel Escobar (right oblique strain) has resumed hitting and is expected to begin taking ground balls on Tuesday. Scioscia said the veteran infielder will work out for the rest of the week before potentially beginning a rehab assignment.
• Richards faced live hitters on Sunday and is now scheduled to throw three innings during a simulated game in Arizona on Friday. The Angels hope he'll be able to build his pitch count to 40 or 45 pitches during the session.
• The Angels signed right-hander Fernando Salas to a Minor League deal and assigned him to Triple-A Salt Lake. Salas spent three years in Anaheim before being traded to the Mets last summer. He re-signed with the Mets over the winter but was released earlier this month after posting a 6.00 ERA in 45 innings.
