NEW YORK -- Nationals slugger Juan Soto left Sunday's 7-4 win over the Mets because of a mild right ankle sprain. He is listed as day to day.

Soto hurt himself running the bases in the top of the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Asdrubal Cabrera doubled down the right-field line off Justin Wilson. Adam Eaton and Anthony Rendon scored on the play. Soto tried to score, but he was stopped by third-base coach Bobby Henley and was tagged out between third and home after rolling the ankle.

Soto tried to stay in the game, but manager Dave Martinez removed him. Soto was replaced by Victor Robles, who later hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning off Mets closer Edwin Diaz.

“I was really happy when Victor hit the homer. I told the trainers, ‘I just came out to let him hit a homer,’” Soto joked.

After the game, Soto said the ankle felt better and he was able walk on it. The injury was nothing compared to the right ankle he broke in 2017.

“I wanted to go out there. They said, 'No stay here. Let’s see what you have.' Then [Gerardo] Parra comes to me and says, ‘Hey, we got this. We have two more innings. Go inside and be ready for tomorrow.'”
