Entering June, Arraez again finds himself intertwined with Gwynn

The Tony Gwynn comparisons have followed Luis Arraez throughout his career, but the Giants second baseman keeps finding new ways to earn them.

According to STATS, only two players over the past 50 seasons have entered June with at least 70 hits and single-digit K’s.

Arraez just became the second to do it, finishing May with 70 hits and nine strikeouts. The only other player to achieve that feat? You guessed it. Gwynn, in both 1991 and ’97.

This is hardly the first time Arraez’s elite bat-to-ball skills have put him in league with the Hall of Famer.

Just last season, he recorded the lowest strikeout rate (3.1%) by a qualified hitter since Gwynn in 1995 (2.6%).

The year before that, Arraez became the first hitter to capture three straight crowns since Gwynn won four in a row from 1994-97, not to mention the first player in the Modern Era (since 1900) to win three batting titles with three different teams at any point.

Arraez failed to make it four consecutive batting titles last season, but he’s back among the league leaders with a .321 average in 2026. In fact, only the Marlins’ Otto López (.326) currently has a higher average among qualifiers.

Another batting title would give Arraez four through eight seasons -- matching Gwynn's total over his first eight years in the Majors.
