WASHINGTON -- The Nationals agreed to a Minor League deal with first baseman Mark Reynolds, a source told MLB.com Thursday night. The club has not confirmed the signing, which is pending a physical.
Reynolds, 34, played in 148 games for the Rockies last season, swatting 30 home runs and posting a .839 OPS. However, his home/road splits indicate he benefited from playing his home games at Coors Fields where he posted a .978 OPS at home compared to a .703 OPS on the road. Reynolds spent the past two seasons in Colorado.

It is unclear how exactly Reynolds would fit on this Nationals roster. They already have two first basemen on their roster in Ryan Zimmerman and Matt Adams, and Reynolds' strengths are a bit redundant compared to them. Adams is a left-handed power hitter who can play first base and has some experience in the outfield, while Reynolds does the same from the right side.

Perhaps he could provide an extra power hitter in the Minors as insurance in the event of an injury. Or perhaps he could be used as a right-handed complement off the bench to Adams at some point during the season.
Reynolds also carries some familiarity with Zimmerman; the two were teammates in college at the University of Virginia from 2003-04 where Reynolds was the shortstop and Zimmerman the third baseman. It gives Washington three former Virginia players on its roster, including left-hander Sean Doolittle, who arrived in 2005, the year after Reynolds left.
