Watch Nick Williams' throw cut down a run

The Marlins topped the Phillies, 3-1, in 10 innings on Thursday night at Citizens Bank Park, despite the best efforts of Philadelphia left fielder Nick Williams.

With two outs in the top of the ninth and Miguel Rojas on second base for Miami, Isaac Galloway lined a single into left field. Williams fielded the ball just as Rojas touched third and fired a one-hop seed to catcher J.T. Realmuto, who lunged across the plate to tag Rojas before he could get his left hand in for the go-ahead run.

“He’s been putting in a ton of time getting ready for that moment," Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said of Williams. "You can’t throw the ball better than that. You can’t prepare yourself to throw the ball better than that -- his angle was perfect, his exchange was perfect. That was one of the bright spots of the evening.”

The teams were tied, 1-1, in the 10th when Starlin Castro hit a two-run homer into the left-field seats -- out of Williams' reach -- for the decisive runs in the Marlins' victory.

While it may not have won the game for Philly, Williams' ninth-inning heroics still stood out.

“It’s huge," said Bryce Harper. "That was a bazooka in left field.”
