Cuthbert out to show he can handle hot corner

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- With the Royals moving on from free-agent third baseman Mike Moustakas, Cheslor Cuthbert knows it's time for him to grab the starting job and run with it.
Royals general manager Dayton Moore indicated Sunnday he was looking forward to seeing Cuthbert play a full season. Manager Ned Yost said he wants to give Cuthbert 500-600 at-bats.

"Really, this year, I just want to have fun and have a good year," said Cuthbert, 25.
Cuthbert filled in for Moustakas in 2016 and played in 128 games as Moustakas recovered from knee surgery. Cuthbert hit .274 with 12 home runs and raised eyebrows on the Royals' coaching staff.
Cuthbert wasn't as effective in a limited role in 2017, hitting .231 with two home runs in 58 games, but Cuthbert believed he gained knowledge last season just by watching Moustakas go about his daily business.
"I learned a lot from him," Cuthbert said. "I saw how he prepared. So hopefully now that I will get that opportunity and it will help me."
First full workout
All players officially were in camp as the squad underwent its first full workout. Left fielder Alex Gordon arrived early Monday afternoon after attending his father's funeral Sunday in Nebraska.

Royals agree to terms on 16 players
The Royals agreed to terms on 2018 Major League contracts with pitchers Heath Fillmyer, Brian Flynn, Sam Gaviglio, Jesse Hahn, Tim Hill, Jakob Junis, Brad Keller, Andres Machado, Kevin McCarthy, Burch Smith, Eric Stout and Kyle Zimmer; catcher Meibrys Viloria and infielders Samir Dueñez, Hunter Dozier and Whit Merrifield.
Interest in Moylan
Former Royals reliever Peter Moylan reportedly has agreed to a deal with the Braves, per ESPN.

Moylan led the American League in appearances last season with 79 appearances and had a 3.49 ERA.
The Royals did contact Moylan, 39, during the offseason and had interest in bringing him back.
Royals kind of player
Yost has brought up former Tigers outfielder Tyler Collins several times while discussing the outfield mix. Collins, 27, is a non-roster invitee.

"Left-handed bat, tough player, our kind of player," Yost said.
