Myers goes deep as Padres knock 4 HRs in rout of M's

PEORIA, Ariz. -- The Padres treated fans on the right-center-field berm to a quartet of souvenirs during Monday's 12-2 victory over the Mariners. Wil Myers and Ryan Schimpf went deep in the first, before Jabari Blash and Luis Sardiñas tacked on a pair of two-run shots later on.
Myers, who is hitting .385 this spring, is clearly ready to start the regular season. So is Blash, whose seven dingers are tied for the Cactus League lead. Schimpf, meanwhile, is getting there after missing time with left oblique tightness earlier this month. He is competing for the Padres' starting third-base job, going 4-for-10 with three walks over his past four games.

Seattle starter Yovani Gallardo allowed seven runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 frames. He will make one more outing in Saturday's spring finale against the Rockies before serving as the Mariners' No. 5 starter.

Gallardo said he felt strong in his 91-pitch outing and had just one takeaway on the day.
"Don't pitch when the wind is going out," Gallardo said with a smile. "I felt good, it was just one of those days."
Ben Gamel, competing for the Mariners' fourth outfield spot, had one of Seattle's seven hits on the day and also made a diving catch in right field to rob Christian Bethancourt of extra bases with two runners on in the third.

Kyle Seager went 2-for-3 with a walk as he lifted his spring average to .308 for Seattle, and Tuffy Gosewisch drove his first homer of the spring to straightaway center in the eighth.

Minor Leaguer Matt Magill started for the Padres, with Jered Weaver pitching on a back field. Magill held the Mariners scoreless over 3 2/3. Righty reliever Carter Capps made his first appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery last March. Capps -- a former Mariner who came to the Padres from Miami in the Andrew Cashner trade -- allowed a run on two hits and two walks in one-third of an inning.

Mariners Up Next:Félix Hernández figures to pitch two or three innings on Tuesday against the D-backs in Peoria in his final tuneup before Opening Day next Monday in Houston. The 1:10 p.m. PT game will be carried live on MLB.TV as well as Gameday Audio.
Padres Up Next:Luis Perdomo is set to make his final spring start on Tuesday when the Friars head to Glendale to face the Dodgers at 1:05 p.m. PT. The 23-year-old right-hander is fighting for a spot at the back of the rotation and has been the most impressive Padres starter this spring. Catcher/reliever hybrid Bethancourt is also slated to pitch. The game can be heard live on Gameday Audio.
