Stanton, Weathers on Yankees' ALDS roster; Rosario off
ST. PETERSBURG – Aaron Judge said he was “doing everything I can” to convince the Yankees that his strained right calf had healed enough to appear on the American League Division Series roster, but the captain’s efforts fell short.
Judge was not included on the 26-man roster announced Saturday morning, which included one change from the squad that swept the Red Sox in a two-game AL Wild Card Series: left-hander Ryan Weathers was added, and infielder/outfielder Amed Rosario was left off.
That means Giancarlo Stanton remains active as a pinch-hitting option off the bench.
Stanton has not played in a Major League game since late April due to calf injuries, but he said during Friday’s workout at Tropicana Field that he would be “ready to go” for whatever the team needed.
“If there’s any time to erase a bad year, it’s in October,” Stanton said. “It’s the biggest opportunity to show out for the city and do what we can do.”
Yankees manager Aaron Boone has said that he does not consider Stanton available as a designated hitter or to play the outfield.
Weathers has not pitched since late August due to a left flexor strain, but he recently touched 96 mph in a live batting practice session at Yankee Stadium, when he faced Stanton, José Caballero and Trent Grisham.
“The [velocity] was in a really good spot, and I felt really good,” Weathers said. “I needed that second live [session], just to sharpen up a little bit more.”
Here is the Yankees’ 26-man roster for the ALDS:
Starters (4): Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, Cam Schlittler
