NEW YORK – Ryan Weathers has enjoyed a breakout season in the Bronx, one that could be interrupted after the Yankees left-hander exited in the fourth inning on Saturday with left forearm discomfort.
Weathers walked off the Yankee Stadium mound with an athletic trainer after throwing an 0-1 ball to the Blue Jays' Myles Straw. He will undergo imaging on Sunday, the team announced.
Toronto scored twice on Weathers, who entered Saturday’s start owning a 2-0 record and a 1.94 ERA over his past seven starts (since July 10).
George Springer and Charles McAdoo stroked run-scoring hits off Weathers, who has set career highs in strikeouts (143), innings pitched (137 1/3) and starts (25). Overall, Weathers has posted a 3.60 ERA.
Starting pitching has been one of the Yankees’ biggest strengths as they aim to catch the division-leading Rays in the American League East race, despite injuries to key stars like Cody Bellinger, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.
Bellinger is expected to be activated from the injured list on Sunday, but Stanton may be out for the year after sustaining a left calf strain earlier this week.
Max Fried is also on the injured list with a left elbow bone bruise, but he tossed a bullpen session on Saturday and could be activated in the minimum 15 days.
There has been speculation that, when Fried returns, either Weathers or Will Warren could have been ticketed for the bullpen – a plan that now seems fluid.
