The New Era Pinstripe Bowl announced that the 2018 game will be played on Thursday, December 27 at 5:15 p.m. at Yankee Stadium. This year will mark the ninth edition of the game and the fifth consecutive New Era Pinstripe Bowl to feature competitors from the Big Ten and ACC Conferences.
History of Football at Yankee Stadium
The New Era Pinstripe Bowl debuted at Yankee Stadium on December 30th, 2010, the first college bowl game to be played at the Yankee Stadium since the Gotham Bowl in 1962. The inaugural game saw Syracuse defeat Kansas State, 36-34. In 2014, the bowl game realigned and partnered with the Atlantic Coast Conference and Big Ten Conference and brought teams such as Penn State, Duke, Northwestern, and current champions, the Iowa Hawkeyes to Yankee Stadium. The game has seen many players go onto to have success in the NFL, including Zack Martin, Mohamed Sanu, Justin Pugh, Logan Ryan, and Tavon Austin among others.
Since 1923, Yankee Stadium has hosted some of the most memorable games the sport has seen. Dating back to Syracuse's 3-0 victory over Pittsburg on October 20, 1923, the original Yankee Stadium hosted 185 collegiate football games. Notable games include the 1946 tie between second-ranked Notre Dame and top-ranked Army, considered to be 'The Game of the Century" along with Notre Dame's 12-6 win over Army inspired by Coach Knute Rockne's "Win One for the Gipper" speech. Notre Dame and Army returned in 2010 and was the first game played at the new Stadium. Since 2010, Yankee Stadium has hosted five regular season football games, including dated rivalries such as Lehigh vs. Lafayette and other programs like University of Connecticut and Rutgers University. The next chapter of Yankee Stadium Football will bring back the Fighting Irish and welcome Syracuse University on November 17th, 2018, part of the Shamrock Series.
