The Yankees are in line to get two of their key contributors back this week.
Outfielder Trent Grisham (strained right hamstring) and infielder Ryan McMahon (peritonsillar abscess) will play in a rehab game Wednesday with Double-A Somerset, and if all goes well, they’ll be back with the big league club on Friday for the start of a three-game series with the Twins. Manager Aaron Boone announced the plans on “Talkin’ Yanks” on Tuesday.
Grisham had been on the 10-day IL since June 13, and he was expected back this week but previously did not have a publicly confirmed timeline.
Grisham's absence has been felt both offensively and defensively in the Bronx. His return to manning center field will help Boone better align his outfield, while his .232/.341/.406 slash line with eight home runs had been a significant boost. The Yankees, losers of five in a row, will certainly welcome that stability.
With Grisham shelved, New York had been rotating starts in center field among Cody Bellinger, José Caballero, Spencer Jones and Max Schuemann.
“When [Grisham is] there, then Belli is where he needs to be [in left field],” Boone said. “I think we certainly miss him. It’s a good thing to see other guys and find out about them, to carve out roles. They’re people that are capable, especially in short bursts.”
McMahon had already been expected to return on Friday, when he will be first eligible to return from the 10-day IL. He had been in New York for workouts.
McMahon was carrying a .629 OPS with eight home runs and 23 RBIs.
