Phillies complete final day of 2021 MLB Draft selections

The Phillies have completed their selections for the third and final day of the 2021 MLB Draft, with one selection in each of today’s 10 rounds (11-20). They selected six right-handed pitchers, two left-handed pitchers, one outfielder and one infielder. Nine were collegiate athletes and one was selected out of high school. The club’s selections from today are as follows:

Round 11 (No. 325)

• RHP Andrew Baker, Chipola College (FL) – The 21-year-old went 7-2 with a 3.45 ERA and averaged 14.44 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched (92 SO/57.1 IP) in 15 games (5 starts) in 2021. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound righty recorded double-digit strikeouts in two of his five starts. Baker, who is from Alabama, has been pitching for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod Baseball League this summer.

Round 12 (No. 355)

• 3B T.J. Rumfield, Virginia Tech – The 6-foot-5, 225-pound infielder batted .315 with 12 doubles, seven home runs, 37 RBI, 35 runs, 26 walks, a .402 on-base percentage and a .478 slugging percentage in 52 games this year. A left-handed hitter, Rumfield tied for the team lead in RBI and multi-hit games (23). The 21-year-old’s father, Toby, played professional baseball for 14 seasons, including stints in the minor league systems of Cincinnati, Atlanta, Chicago-AL, Florida and St. Louis.

Round 13 (No. 385)

• OF Jared Carr, Shepherd University (WV) – Carr, 22, hit .375 with 12 doubles, 11 home runs, 41 RBI, 38 runs, 25 stolen bases, a .447 on-base percentage and a .727 slugging percentage in 37 games in 2021. He was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association First Team All-Atlantic Region and First Team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East while also being recognized as a NCBWA Honorable Mention All-American. During the left-handed hitter’s four-year collegiate career, he posted a .385/.454/.646 slash line with 38 doubles, six triples, 20 homers, 104 RBI and 54 steals in 127 games.

Round 14 (No. 415)

• LHP Jose Valadez-Acuna, Veterans Memorial High School (TX) – Valadez-Acuna, an 18-year-old, previously committed to play at Texas Tech University. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound lefty is from Corpus Christi, Texas.

Round 15 (No. 445)

• LHP Matt Osterberg, St. Cloud State University (MN) – The 6-foot-2 southpaw made nine starts in his senior season, going 3-3 with a 3.78 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 50.0 innings. He also held opponents to a .208 batting average, which was the lowest mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The 22-year-old Wisconsin native went 12-7 with a 3.72 ERA and averaged 10.82 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched (192 SO/159.2 IP) in 35 games (25 starts) during his four-year collegiate career.

Round 16 (No. 475)

• RHP Ty Collins, Glendale College (CA) – Collins, 19, did not pitch this season, as the team’s season was canceled. The 6-foot-3 pitcher is a 2020 graduate of St. John Bosco High School (CA).

Round 17 (No. 505)

• RHP Alex Garbrick, University of South Carolina Upstate – The 23-year-old posted a 7-3 record with a 3.39 ERA and 74 strikeouts over 66.1 innings in 14 starts this year. Prior to this season, the 6-foot-1 righty pitched in three seasons at Morehead State University (KY). His hometown is Mill Hall, Pa.

Round 18 (No. 535)

• RHP Malik Binns, Benedictine University Mesa (AZ) – The 6-foot-7, 240-pound Binns struck out 55 batters in 55.0 innings this year. He appeared in 15 games, including 10 starts. Before 2021, he pitched in two seasons at Waubonsee Community College (IL) and averaged 10.25 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched (41 SO/36.0 IP). Binns, who is 22 years old, is from Illinois.

Round 19 (No. 565)

• RHP Seth Halvorsen, University of Missouri – Halvorsen, 21, went 4-2 and recorded 70 strikeouts over 14 starts (72.0 IP) in 2021. The 6-foot-2 righty was originally selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 30th round of the 2018 MLB Draft but did not sign. In 2018, he was selected as the Gatorade Minnesota Baseball Player of the Year and was the recipient of the Minnesota “Mr. Baseball” Award.

Round 20 (No. 595)

• RHP Cam Wynne, University of Nebraska – The 22-year-old posted a 3.12 ERA with 19 strikeouts and just six hits allowed (.113 OPP AVG) in 17.1 innings of relief this season. The 6-foot-6 Wynne pitched for Texas A&M University during last year’s shortened collegiate season.
