Rangers sign INF Matt Carpenter to Minor League contract

Surprise, Ariz. — The Texas Rangers today formally announced the signing of free agent infielder Matt Carpenter to a minor league contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training camp.

The 36-year-old Carpenter has spent his entire 11-year MLB career in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, batting .262 with 155 home runs and an .816 OPS figure. A three-time National League All-Star, Carpenter ranks 13th in Cardinals history in both doubles (301) and home runs (155). Over a six-year span from 2013-18, he led the National League in doubles (241) and runs (609), a period in which he generated a slash line of .273/.378/.472/.851.

Carpenter has played in the postseason in six of the last 10 seasons, posting 6 home runs and 21 RBI over 50 career playoff contests. He batted .169 over 130 games for St. Louis in 2021. He has played primarily at third base in his MLB career, and has also seen significant action at first base and second base. The Texas native and Texas Christian University product still resides in Glen Rose.

With the signing of Carpenter, the Rangers now have 68 players on the club’s Spring Training roster: 40 on the Major League roster and 28 non-roster invitees.
