Made his 5th consecutive Opening Day roster, making the Yankees Opening Day roster each season from 2020-23...His 2.85 starter ERA led all SD starting pitchers, while he also set career highs and ranked 2nd on the SD staff behind only Dylan Cease in games started (30), IP (173.2), wins (13), quality starts (14), strikeouts (201), opponents' OPS (.642), SO/9 IP (10.4), total pitches (2,895), pitches per game (93.4) and whiff rate (29.2%)...His 16 outings allowing 1 ER-or-fewer across at least 5.0 IP led the SD staff and were second-most in the NL, trailing only Zack Wheeler (17)...King's seven 100+ pitch outings this season were second-most on the SD staff, trailing Dylan Cease's 18 100+ pitch outings…he had just one 100+ pitching outing prior to ’24 with SD...His 93.4 pitches per game were 10th-most among all qualifying NL hurlers...Cease (224 strikeouts) and King (201) ranked T-2nd and 5th in the NL, respectively, in total strikeouts, combining as the only NL duo in the same starts (May 4 @ ARI and May 10 vs. LAD)...In the Friday May 10 start vs. LAD, a 2-1 SD victory, King posted the second of four consecutive outings by SD starting pitchers allowing 2 hits-or-fewer across at least five IP... the Padres became the first team to string together four consecutive such starts since at least 1893 (the first season the current mound distance was established)...Also in Was the only pitcher in the Majors in 2023 to record at least five saves and make at least five starts … became the second pitcher in Yankees' history to accomplish the feat (since saves became an official stat in 1969), joining Dick Tidrow in 1977, who recorded five saves and made seven starts that season. Opponents slashed .226/.292/.346...lefties hit .179 (29-for-162) while righties hit .259 (59-for-228). As a reliever, went 3-4 with six saves and a 3.08 ERA (22 ER, 64.1 IP) in 40 appearances … recorded at least four outs in 27 of those 40 games, the fifth-most such appearances among all ML relievers...his 20 relief appearances of at least five outs were T-7th in the Majors. Tossed at least 2.0 innings in 15 games as a reliever … his 12 relief appearances of at least 2.0 scoreless innings were T-2nd most in the Majors. Matijevic in the ninth inning (0.2IP, 3H, 1ER, 1BB/1IBB, 2K)....Made his final appearance of the season on 7/22 at Baltimore, retiring his first three batters faced before leaving the game due to a right elbow fracture....Was placed on the 60-day injured list on 7/23 with a right elbow fracture and missed the remainder of the season....At the time he was placed on the injured list, he ranked second among Major League relievers in strikeouts and innings pitched....Underwent an open reduction and internal fixation on his right elbow (ulna fracture) by Dr. David Altchek at the Hospital for Special Surgery on 7/27.
