Thomas Andrew Nance...Graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, Calif....Led his team to the 2007 CIF and National Championship...Selected as a member of the First-Team All-Moore League and Second-Team All-CIF in 2008...Finished his senior year with a 0.28 ERA...Started his college baseball career at Long Beach State, before transferring to Cypress College, and then finishing at Santa Clara University...In two seasons with the Santa Clara Broncos, he went 7-10 with a 3.99 ERA across 30 combined appearances (23 starts), recording 48 walks, 89 strikeouts and a 1.34 WHIP...His father, Mark, was diagnosed with ALS in 2014...While with the Cubs, Nance connected with Jonathan “Boog” Sciambi, a Marquee Sports Network broadcaster and former Marlins broadcaster...Sciambi is the director at Project Main Street, a foundation with the mission of improving the quality of life for patients with ALS, while also raising awareness...Nance is a member of the MLB ALS committee.

Began the season on the 15-day Injured List with a right shoulder strain and split the campaign between four levels in the Miami Marlins organization, making just 13 appearances (three starts) with a 1.59 ERA (3 ER, 17.0 IP)...Was transferred to the 60-day IL with a right shoulder strain on April 22, and began his rehab assignment on May 12 with Single-A Jupiter...made three stints in total with Jupiter with four appearances overall (one start) and allowed two run in 5.1 innings of work...On July 26, was sent to the Rookie-Level Florida Complex League Marlins on rehab, and he worked 2.0 scorless innings in two appearances...After being re-assigned to Jupiter, he was transferred to Double-A Pensacola on August 8...for the Blue Wahoos, made five total appearances (all in relief), for a perfect 0.00 ERA in 7.2 innings of work...owned a 0.83 opponent clip at the Double-A level and a 0.52 WHIP...Transferred to Triple-A Jacksonville on Aug. 22 for a sole appearance before being reinstated from the 60-day IL on Aug. 23...did not make an appearance with MIA before being optioned back to JAX on Aug. 29...assigned to Juptier on Aug. 31...Was assigned back to JAX on Sept. 3 and placed on the 7-day IL on Sept. 16...the Marlins later placed him back on the 60-day IL with a left oblique strain on Sept. 19...Elected free agency on Nov. 6, and he was signed by San Diego as a Minor League free agent on Dec. 10.

2022

Tommy Nance was selected off waivers by Miami from the Chicago Cubs on March 27, 2022, and was recalled to the Majors on May 5. Went 2-3 with a 4.33 ERA, setting a career-high with 35 appearances (2 starts)…Allowed one run over first six outings (7.2 innings), including a three-strikeout appearance in 1.2 innings in his Marlins debut May 9. Had a 9.45 ERA in his next 10 appearances...Held lefties to a .184 avg. against with a .591 OPS, while righties hit .330 (31-for-94) with a .921 OPS...Faced two setbacks from a right groin strain, missing a combined 32 games over two IL stints (July 24-Aug. 13 and Sept. 14-29)…In two games started, combined to pitch 5.0 innings and allow one run on four hits (1.80 ERA) with three walks and seven strikeouts. In other 33 appearances, posted a 4.66 ERA (38.2 IP/20 ER)…Ranks in the 92nd percentile in MLB with a power curve that has 48.3 inches of drop.

2021

Made his Major League debut with Chicago-NL on May 17 vs. Washington...Struck out the first batter he faced (Josh Harrison) for first MLB strikeout...Was 1-1 in 27 appearances out of the bullpen with a 7.27 ERA (28.2 IP/23 ER) with 13 walks and 30 strikeouts...Made 10 appearances with Triple-A Iowa, posting a 2.35 ERA (15.1 IP/4 ER) and a 0.652 WHIP.

2020

The minor league season was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2019

Made a career-high 31 relief appearances, pitching primarily with Double-A Tennessee … went 2-5 with five saves and a 4.07 ERA (22 ER/48.2 IP), walking 18 and striking out 56, good for an average of 10.4 strikeouts per 9.0 innings...Left-handed hitters batted just .179 (14-for-78) with a .244 OBP and a .539 OPS...Had a 1.98 ERA (3 ER/13.2 IP) in eight July outings … walked four and struck out 16.

2018

Missed the final three months of the season with a right hip strain … went 1-1 with a 3.48 ERA (8 ER/20.2 IP) in 15 relief appearances for Double-A Tennessee … walked 11 and struck out 20.

Missed the entire season due to a right shoulder injury.

2016

In his first season in the Cubs chain, was 4-1 with a 2.58 ERA (11 ER/38.1 IP) in 22 relief appearances between Single-A Eugene, Triple-A Iowa, Single-A South Bend and Single-A Myrtle Beach … walked 15 and struck out 36.
