Red-hot Ewing, Mets No. 3 prospect, one step closer to bigs after promotion to Triple-A

During A.J. Ewing’s breakout 2025 season, he climbed three levels from Single-A to Double-A and pushed his way onto the Top 100 Prospects list. With his latest move, he’s already joining his second level of 2026 with only The Show left to go.

The Mets promoted Ewing -- the club’s No. 3 prospect and MLB Pipeline’s No. 85 overall talent -- to Triple-A Syracuse on Monday, the organization announced.

The 21-year-old center fielder/second baseman put together a .349/.481/.571 slash line with two homers in 18 games with Double-A Binghamton before the move. He leads Mets Minor League qualifiers in all three slash-line categories and is also tops with his 17 walks, 12 steals and 181 wRC+. He was also one of only nine Double-A qualifiers to walk more times than he struck out (15) while slugging above .500 entering Monday.

A left-handed hitter, Ewing had just started to flash more power in the Eastern League, having hit his two dingers on back-to-back days last Thursday and Friday at home against Erie and adding a triple in the second half of a doubleheader Sunday.

Taken 134th overall in 2023 with the pick the Mets received for losing Jacob deGrom to free agency, the Ohio native has been on a rocket ship since the start of last season. He hit .315/.401/.429 with three homers and 70 steals across 124 games at Single-A, High-A and Double-A in ‘25, all while showing plus-plus speed and balancing learning center field after being drafted as an infielder.

His high motor made him a standout on the Major League side in Spring Training, where he was a non-roster invite this year, and he had a .381 average and 1.090 OPS in 26 plate appearances in Grapefruit League play.

“I think he just played the game fearlessly while he was in big league camp,” senior vice president of player development Andy Green told MLB.com in March. “And that's what he has to do to be successful for the long term.”

That momentum has carried into the regular season and has helped thrust Ewing to the Minors’ top level. He joins a Syracuse squad already loaded with top Mets prospects like fellow hitters Ryan Clifford (No. 4) and Nick Morabito (No. 12) and top arms Jonah Tong (No. 2), Jack Wenninger (No. 6), Ryan Lambert (No. 17) and right-hander Jonathan Pintaro (No. 22). Ewing and Morabito (a member of the 40-man roster) are in the conversation for fastest prospect in the farm system and could compete for reps in center field, though it’s notable three of Morabito’s four starts in right field have come in his last eight games.
