The mission of Operation Breakthrough is to provide a safe, loving and educational environment for children in poverty and to empower their families through advocacy, emergency aid and education.
Hundreds of urban Kansas City children come to Operation Breakthrough each weekday, for nutritious food, lively learning, health and dental care, therapy and TLC, while their parents work or attend school. Total enrollment is 720 and children range from infants to age 14. About 20% are homeless. More than 70% of Operation Breakthrough families live on annual earnings of less than $12,000. 65% of the children have witnessed violence by age 5.
During the coronavirus crisis, Operation Breakthrough stayed open to care daily for the children, infants to eighth graders, of essential workers. Through a partnership with Connecting for Good, Operation Breakthrough provided refurbished laptops and/or hotspots to families who needed them so children could continue learning at home. Each week, 265 families received food, toiletries, activities, manipulatives, and educational packets during the pandemic.
