Paddack called his duel with D-backs ace Madison Bumgarner "a cowboy showdown." It will be Paddack's first Opening Day start. After a series of restrictions and workload limitations in 2019, Paddack will be turned loose in '20.

Ray was outstanding in his Spring Training starts and carried that over into Summer Camp. A free agent at the end of the season, Ray dropped weight this offseason due to a change in diet and new workout regimen. He hopes an adjustment to his mechanics -- he’s shortened his arm action -- will pay off with better command.

Lamet is a popular pick for a breakout 2020 season, and there's plenty of evidence to support that. He was dominant in Spring Training and Summer Camp and has harnessed two spin weapons -- his high-octane slider and a sharp, biting curveball.

Gallen was acquired by the D-backs from the Marlins prior to last season’s Trade Deadline and he was one of their best pitchers over the final two months of the season. One of his best starts with the D-backs came against the Padres on Sept. 4, when he allowed just one hit and a walk over seven shutout innings.

Technically, Richards returned from Tommy John surgery with three starts late last season. But when the Padres signed him 18 months ago, it was always with an eye on 2020. When healthy, Richards has shown front-of-the-rotation stuff.
