Why stop at one no-hitter in a season when you can throw two?

On Oct. 3, 2015, Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer tossed his second no-hitter of the year in a 2-0 victory over the Mets at Citi Field. The first no-no came on June 20 against the Pirates.

Against the Mets, Scherzer concluded his first year with the Nationals in memorable fashion. He fanned a staggering 17 batters -- including nine in a row -- and did not issue a walk over 109 pitches. The 17 K’s tied Nolan Ryan’s record for a no-hitter, set in 1973. Scherzer’s performance was nearly perfect, short of Kevin Plawecki reaching on a throwing error by Yunel Escobar in the sixth inning.

"When you go through the order one time through, you know you have something going. When you go through the lineup two times through, you know you have a real shot," Scherzer said. "After you get through six [innings], you know you have a shot. If you can get through seven, then you can really empty the tank in the eighth. And you give everything you have in the ninth.

“Once I was able to get through the seventh, I knew, 'Here we go. We have a real shot at this.'"

Scherzer joined Ryan, Johnny Vander Meer (1938), Allie Reynolds (’51), Virgil Trucks (’52) and Roy Halladay (2010) to become the sixth pitcher in Major League history to throw a pair of no-hitters in the same season. He set himself apart by being the first pitcher to do so without issuing a walk and for accomplishing it against two playoff-bound opponents.
