Jones on DL after taking pitch to face

MINNEAPOLIS -- The injury-depleted Tigers might have suffered another loss Saturday with rookie center fielder JaCoby Jones, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left lip laceration following Saturday's 5-4 win over the Twins after being hit on the mouth by a fastball in the third inning.
Jones was examined at a local hospital following the game. He received nine stitches, the Tigers announced, but avoided serious injury.
"I can tell you it was a nasty split lip," manager Brad Ausmus said. "They think his teeth are all intact, but they're doing a CT [scan] just to make sure there's no other structural damage."
Detroit purchased the contract of outfielder/first baseman Jim Adduci from Triple-A Toledo to fill Jones' spot.
Justin Haley replaced Twins lefty starter Adalberto Mejía with two outs in the third to get a righty-righty matchup, but he lost a 90-mph pitch up and in. Jones tried to turn and ended up taking it in the face. He immediately got up and ran toward the Tigers' dugout as head athletic trainer Kevin Rand hurried with a towel to address the bleeding.

Those who saw it described it strongly.
"That's horrifying," said Tigers starter Matthew Boyd, who was in the dugout when it happened. "Right when you see him get hit and you see red on his face, you just start praying for him. Hopefully all will be good."
Said Ausmus: "I don't get squeamish very much. That made me a little squeamish. It wasn't even a lot of blood. It was probably a half-inch-long cut and you could see the meat inside. It might have been split all the way through. That's how deep it was. I checked on it before he went to the hospital, and it was nasty."
Andrew Romine pinch-ran for Jones and replaced him in center field.
Jones' injury came less than three hours after the Tigers placed slugger Miguel Cabrera on the 10-day disabled list with a right groin strain suffered in Friday's loss to the Twins. Shortstop José Iglesias went on the seven-day concussion DL on Friday. Add in right fielder J.D. Martinez, who has been on the 10-day DL all season with a right midfoot sprain, and the Tigers are dealing with the kind of injury misfortunes they can't afford.
Adduci was removed from Triple-A Toledo's game at Lehigh Valley on Saturday after two at-bats. The 31-year-old, signed out of Korea over the offseason, is batting .349 for the Mud Hens with a home run and three RBIs.
Romine would be the logical candidate to start in Jones' place in center, but he's also part of the mix at shortstop and first base.
