Reds Announce Major League Outstanding Player
CINCINNATI - Tonight on the main stage during Bally Sports Ohio Redsfest presented by PNC Bank at Duke Energy Convention Center downtown, the Reds and the local chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America announced their 2023 Major League award winners.
IF/OF Spencer Steer (156g, .271, 37 2b, 3 3b, 23hr, 86rbi, 15sb .820ops) was named winner of the BBWAA's Ernie Lombardi Award as the team's Most Valuable Player. He led the team in games, hits (134), home runs, doubles, walks (68), extra-base hits (63), total bases (270), RBI, on-base percentage (.356), and OPS.
In 2023, Steer became 1 of 4 players in Reds history to make at least 15 appearances at 4 positions in a single season (73g at 1B, 47g at 3B, 45g at LF, 16g at 2B). He finished sixth in the voting for National League Rookie of the Year, and was a finalist for the MLBPA's Player's Choice Award for Most Outstanding Rookie and for the Silver Slugger Award.
RHP Alexis Díaz (71g, 9-6-37, 3.07, 67.1ip,44h, 36bb, 86k, .186oba), for the second consecutive year, received the Johnny Vander Meer Most Outstanding Pitcher Award.
Díaz was the Reds' lone National League All-Star in 2023, and led the Reds staff in saves and wins. He converted 22 straight saves to begin the season and 12 straight from July 2 to August 22.
OF TJ Friedl was named winner of the BBWAA's Joe Nuxhall Good Guy Award.
