Began the season on the Major League roster, but was sidelined after his second appearance of the season with a pulled right groin...pulled the groin on April 10 vs. Anaheim and was placed on the 15-day disabled list the next day...began a rehabilitation assignment on April 24 at Akron, but aggravated the injury in his first outing that night in Canal Park...began a second rehabilitation assignment in Triple-A Buffalo on May 23...appeared in 11 games for the Bisons and went 0-0 with a 2.51 ERA and two saves (4 ER/14.1 IP)...was activated from the DL on June 15 and enjoyed an injury-free rest of the season...did not allow a run over his team-high eight playoff appearances in the team's 10 1998 playoff games...his five appearances in the ALCS vs. New York tied the single-series record shared by Mike Jackson and Paul Assenmacher in 1997...was 2-for-5 in save situations...held batters to a .132 (7-for-53) average with runners in scoring position, the best mark in the AL among relievers.

Started out the season as the closer and notched a save at Oakland in his first appearance on opening night on April 2...signed a three-year contract extension through the 2000 campaign (w/club option for 2001) on April 4 and that night at Anaheim he allowed a grand slam to Tim Salmon in the 11th inning, giving Anaheim an 8-6 win as he suffered his first and only blown save of the season...tossed a then career-high 3.0 innings pitched on April 18 vs. Milwaukee and strained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee as he warmed up for his fourth inning of work...was placed on the 15-day DL on May 4 (retroactive to April 25)...made rehabilitation stints in Buffalo and Akron before being activated on May 18...on June 18 vs. Cincinnati strained his right hamstring and was forced to leave the game...placed on the 15-day DL for the second time on June 19 and was activated on July 4...re-aggravated the hamstring injury in his first appearance back on July 11 at Minnesota and was again placed on the 15-day DL for the third time on July 12 and activated on Aug. 1...spent the remainder of the season on the active roster... after his final activation on Aug. 1 he went 2-1 with a 7.36 ERA in 26 games (18 ER/22.0 IP)...tossed a career-high 4.0 innings with a season-high five strikeouts on Aug. 16 vs. Toronto...was not on any of the three playoff rosters.
1996
Established himself as a solid Major League reliever as he led the Indians' bullpen with five wins...began the season in Triple-A Buffalo...was involved in an automobile accident on April 3 while with Triple-A Buffalo when his car spun off an icy road...was not seriously injured in the accident...was recalled from Buffalo on April 12...allowed seven runs (7 ER) over three games (2.1 IP, 6 BB, 27.00 ERA) in his first stint with the Indians and suffered his first loss on April 17 in Minnesota...was optioned back to Buffalo on April 21...later discovered he was suffering from a post-traumatic disorder from his accident in early April during his first stint with Cleveland...American Association hitters hit .126 (14-for-111) off him while he averaged 15.4 SO/9.0 IP...right handed hitters hit .127 (9-for-71) off him while lefties hit .125 (5-for-40)...was recalled on June 10 and spent the remainder of the season at the big league level...in his second stint with the Tribe, went 5-1 with a 1.75 ERA and four saves in 39 games...collected first Major League win on June 20 vs. Boston...struck out a career-high six Orioles on Aug. 4 in 2.1 innings...overall held AL hitters to a .231 (45- for-195) average against...first batters hit just .189 off him (7- for-37), the eighth-lowest mark in the AL...limited opponents to a .185 avg. with runners on base (17-for-92), the fourth-lowest mark among AL relievers...his 2.85 ERA was eighth lowest among AL relievers...went 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA in three Division Series outings vs. the Baltimore Orioles...allowed a grand slam to Bobby Bonilla in Game 1 at Baltimore.
1995
Began the season at the big league level following Spring Training...appeared in three games before injuring his right hamstring in the ninth inning in Detroit on May 3...injury diagnosed as a strain and was placed on the 15-day DL the next day...was activated from the DL on May 22 and optioned to Buffalo...made only one appearance, a save vs. Oklahoma City on May 25, before being placed on the disabled list with a sore right shoulder on June 8...was activated from the DL on July 10 and spent remainder of Buffalo's season on the active roster...recalled by the Indians on Sept. 17...allowed two earned runs in his four outings (3.0 IP) during his second stint...spent the remainder of the season at the big league level but was ineligible for postseason play...played winter ball in Puerto Rico for the San Juan Senators...was 0-0 with a 2.30 ERA and nine saves in his 15 winter ball appearances.
1994
Started the season at Single-A Kinston...made 13 relief appearances and was 1-0 with a 3.75 ERA and eight saves, including 16 strikeouts in 12.0 innings...made the jump to the Majors when the Indians purchased his contract... he was the first Indians pitcher to jump from Single-A ball to the Majors since Greg Swindell in 1986...made his big league debut on May 8 at Baltimore, tossing 1.0 shutout inning...on May 14 at Jacobs Field against the Tigers, recorded four strikeouts in one inning after a batter reached on a wild pitch...became the 10th AL pitcher to accomplish the feat and the first rookie...he was the first Tribesman to record four strikeouts in an inning since Mike Paxton on July 21, 1978...had five saves with the Indians and was 5-for-5 in converting save chances...on June 27 he was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained groin...was sent to Triple-A on July 5 on a rehabilitation assignment was activated from the DL on July 21...optioned to Charlotte that day, where he spent the rest of the year as the Knights closer.

Started the season in the rotation at Double-A Canton-Akron before being sent to the bullpen after seven starts...assigned to Single-A Kinston on July 24, where he remained for the rest of the season...played for Scottsdale in the Arizona Fall League and was 1-1 with three saves and a 3.79 ERA.

Started professional career after being drafted by Cleveland in June out of the University of North Carolina...won five of his first six decisions with a 1.82 ERA through Aug. 12...recorded a season-high nine strikeouts against Savannah on Aug. 2...used strictly as a starter in his first season after a stellar career as a closer for the Tar Heels...played for Tucson in the Arizona Fall League following the season...in 10 relief outings was 0-0 with a 3.38 ERA (6 ER/16 IP).
