Edward Adrian Guardado...is active within Eddie Guardado Foundation and Ava's Friends, which was launched when daughter, Ava, was diagnosed as autistic...the non-profit organization is dedicated to directly helping children with autism and their families, with the mission being to provide these children with the same chance as other youngsters to grow, develop and enjoy a full life...is an '89 graduate of Franklin (CA) High...as a prep, played baseball (MVP, All-Area) and football (team MVP as a senior)...played collegiately at San Joaquin Delta (CA) JC...brother, Denny (infielder), played college ball at Lewis & Clark College...was MVP of his Babe Ruth team in '85 and American Legion squad in '89.
2009
Posted 5 holds and worked scoreless relief in 36 of 48 appearances in return campaign with TEX...made 40 or more appearances for the 14th time in 15 seasons (exception 2007)..made 900th career appearances on August 4 at OAK... became the 21st pitcher, the 5th lefthander to reach 900...worked less than 1.0 inning 17 times...notched a 2.51 ERA in 19 road appearances...on April 30 vs. OAK, was ejected by HP umpire Angel Campos for arguing balls and strikes.
2008
One of the team's most popular players, Guardado was the Rangers' closer for much of August before being traded to Minnesota...went 3-3 with 4 saves and a 3.65 ERA (20 ER/49.1 IP) over 55 relief appearances for Texas, and was a combined 4-4 with 4 saves and a 4.15 ERA (26 ER/56.1 IP) in 64 total outings with the Rangers and Twins...the 64 appearances was his most since 66 games in his final season with Minnesota in 2003.
2007
Spent majority of final season with the Reds continuing comeback from September '06 "Tommy John" surgery, but did pitch in 15 games for CIN in the season's 2nd half...returned to big leagues on August 9...struggled early, but closed strong, posting a 0.93 ERA in final 10 appearances beginning August 23...successfully converted all 4 save opportunities while serving as the Reds' closer for much of August...pitched in 800th career game, April 26 vs. MIN.
2006
Didn't pitch after 8/19 because of an elbow injury...on 9/8 had season-ending "Tommy John" surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament and torn flexor mass tendon in his left elbow (Dr. Timothy Kremchek)...for the Mariners and Reds combined to post 13 saves and a 3.89era in 43 relief apps...began the season with Sea and went 1-3, 5.48 with 5 saves before he was traded to the Reds on 7/6...joined the club on 7/7 and that night at Atl made his National League debut after 766 career apps and 175 saves in the AL for the Twins and Mariners...recorded a 1.29era and 8 saves in 15 apps for the Reds...posted an 8.31era in April (9g, 8.2ip, 8er) and a 2.54era the rest of the season (34g, 28.1ip, 8er)...allowed just 1 earned run in his last 11 apps of the season (10.1ip) and allowed only 2 earned runs for the Reds overall (14ip)...the Reds went 13-2 when he pitched...converted 13-18 save opps overall, including 8-10 with Cin and 5-8 for Sea...made his last appearance of the season on 8/19 vs Pit (0.1ip, 1h, 1k, 10pch)...left that game with the elbow injury...went on the DL the next day and didn't pitch again the rest of the season...when he reported to Cin on 7/7 was issued uniform #45...on 7/13 changed to #81, the highest ever worn by a Reds player, manager or coach.
2005
Was voted Mariners Pitcher of the Year by the Seattle chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America...was a Seattle Post-Intelligencer Sports Star of the Year nominee...among American League pitching leaders ranked T7th in saves (36) and T8th in games finished (55)...his 36 saves was the fourth-highest total in Mariners history (Sasaki, 45sv in 2001; Sasaki, 37sv in 2000 & 2002) and the most-ever by a lefthander (Charlton, 20sv in 1996)...became 1 of only 4 Mariners to post 30 saves in a season (Sasaki, Schooler, Mesa)...converted 36-41 save opps (88%), including a club-record 27 consecutive saves from 4/13-8/9...had 8 saves in April, second-highest total ever by a Mariner in the season's first month...collected his 150th career save on 6/4 vs TB...on 5/30 vs Tor recorded a save in his 700th career appearance...from 5/15-6/4 retired 21 consecutive batters...in spring training was bothered by a strained right hamstring.
2004
First season in Seattle was cut short by injury and surgery...converted 18 of 25 save opps (72%), including 15 of first 19 (79%)...limited opposing hitters to a .194 batting average against (31x160); lefties hit .109 (5x46)...failed to convert final two save opportunities (July 29 and 31) before being placed on the DL...was tied for 5th in the AL in saves when he was placed on the DL...placed on the 15-day disabled list Aug. 2 (retro to Aug. 1) with left shoulder fatigue; injury was later confirmed to be a tear in the rotator cuff...Dr. Lewis Yocum recommended rehabilitation instead of surgery...underwent surgery on Aug. 23 on his left knee (arthroscopic meniscectomy and debridement); was unable to push off back leg, which contributed to strain on left shoulder...transferred to 60-day DL Sept. 6 while he continued to rehab...pitched in Arizona with the Mariners Instructional League team as part of his rehabilitation.
2003
Finished second in AL in saves (41) and third in games finished (60)...converted 24 consecutive save opportunities, Sept. 4, 2002-June 5...named to second consecutive All-Star Game, tossing 0.1 IP at the Midsummer Classic...converted 17 consecutive saves, Aug. 4-Sept. 24...recorded 100th career save, Aug. 4 at Baltimore...made 600th career relief appearance and became fourth Twins pitcher to record 30-plus saves in back-to-back seasons, Aug. 29 at Texas...first-batters faced were 8x59 (.136) with 14 strikeouts...had .207 batting-average-against with left-handers batting .175 (11x63) with no homers and right-handers batting .219 (39x178) with 7 homers.
2002
Led AL with career-high 45 saves and was third in games finished (62)...converted first 14 save opportunities...did not allow a run in 11 appearances (11.0 IP), April 12-May 6...named to first All-Star team, July 9 at Milwaukee...was 0-0, 0.00 (9 IP, 0 ER) with 7 saves, July 14-Aug. 9...did not allow a run in 7 of 8 games, Sept. 9-28...recorded 43rd save becoming Twins' All -Time leader for saves in a season, Sept. 18 at Detroit...first-batters faced were 14x65 (.215) with 17 strikeouts...had .215 batting-average-against with left-handers batting .263 (15-57) with one homer and right-handers batting .200 (38-190) with 8 homers.
2001
Had career-high 7-game win-streak, April 5-Sept. 2...disabled with medial meniscus tear in left knee, June 5-20...had successful surgery on left knee, June 6...was 1-0, 0.00 (8.0 IP, 0 ER) with one save in 8 appearances, June 20-July 7...did not allow a run in 13 consecutive appearances (13.1 IP), July 21-August 17...was 0-1, 2.57 (7.0 IP, 2 ER) with 8 saves, Sept. 8-October 7...500th career appearance, Sept. 25 at Chicago.
2000
Was 2-1, 1.25 (21.2 IP, 3 ER) with 3 saves in 27 appearances, May 2-June 27...did not walk a batter in 11 appearances (12.0 IP), June 18-July 9...was 9x11 (82%) in save opportunities...had .238 batting-average-against with left-handers going 25x88 (.284) with 5 homers and right-handers 30x143 (.210) with 9 homers...averaged 7.59 strikeouts per-9 innings...first-batters-faced were 14x64 (.219)...stranded 35 of 49 (71%) inherited runners.
