Randall Scott Karl...lives in Solana Beach with his wife Dorret...played 3 seasons at the University of Hawaii, named All-Western Athletic Conference in 1991 and 1992...was WAC Player of the Year and a 2nd-team All American as a junior in 1992...earned All-WAC academic honors in 1991 and 1992...was a prep standout at Carlsbad (CA) High, lettering in baseball and soccer...earned all-conference honors at Carlsbad, where he was team captain and Player of the Year as a senior...enjoys visiting with children at San Diego-area libraries.
2000
SUMMARY:
Spent the season's first 4-plus months with Colorado before being traded to Anaheim August 22, combining to go 4-5 with a 7.42 ERA in 23 games (13 starts) for Colorado and Anaheim...opponents batted .341 (126-for-369)...after pitching exclusively as a starter from 1996-99, 3 of his 4 wins in 2000 came in relief.
WITH COLORADO:
Got a no-decision in his April 8 Rockies debut at Florida...gave up 2 runs on 7 hits in 6.0 innings...was 1-2 with a 7.78 ERA through the end of May before being moved to the Rockies' bullpen...despite a 10.41 home ERA, both of his N.L. wins came at Coors Field (May 2 vs. Montreal and June 10 vs. Texas)...was placed on the 15-Day D.L. July 16 with a lower back strain...made 3 rehab starts for Triple-A Colorado Springs, going 0-3 with a 5.66 ERA...returned for one relief appearance August 6 vs. Philadelphia, but allowed 4 runs on 4 hits in 3.0 innings...did not pitch for the Rockies again and was traded to Anaheim on August 22.
WITH ANAHEIM:
Made one start for Single-A Lake Elsinore of the California League, then had his contract purchased by Anaheim on August 29...recorded his first Angels win, September 15 at Minnesota, his first A.L. victory since September 14, 1997 with Milwaukee at Texas...pocketed his 2nd win on September 23 at Texas...made 4 starts for Anaheim, and pitched twice out of the bullpen.
1999
Reached 10 wins and 30 starts for the 4th straight season, finishing 11-11 with a 4.78 ERA in 33 starts in his 9th and final season in the Brewers chain...tied for 4th in the N.L. with 26 double plays induced, and ranked 7th with 1.18 double plays per 9 innings...his 3.58 road ERA was 9th-best in the N.L...won 4 straight decisions April 25-May 22...allowed only 2 home runs to lefthanders (Al Martin and Steve Finley)...took Pedro Astacio deep June 6 at Coors Field for his first career homer...became the first Brewers pitcher to homer twice in a season when he again went deep in his next start June 11 at Minnesota off Dan Perkins...went 4-1 with a 4.02 ERA in his final 10 starts...the Brewers went 16-17 in Karl's 33 starts, including wins in his final 5 games.
1998
Established a career high with a Brewers team-high 33 starts...finished 10-11, but Milwaukee went 20-13 in Scott's starts (10-2 in his no-decisions)...ranked 5th in the N.L. by inducing 1.03 double plays per 9 innings...August 25 at Coors Field, hit the first triple by a Brewers pitcher since Eduardo Rodriguez on September 3, 1973...became the first Milwaukee lefty to start the season 4-0 since Teddy Higuera in 1987...earned Milwaukee's first N.L. win at County Stadium, April 7 vs. Montreal.
1997
Was 10-13 with a 4.47 ERA in 32 starts for Milwaukee...dropped his first 5 decisions, but rebounded to win 8 straight decisions July 15-August 29, posting a 2.45 ERA ...Scott's 8-game winning streak matched Mike Caldwell's team mark for southpaws and tied for 3rd in club annals...matched his career high with 8 stikeouts June 29 at Kansas City...tossed his only complete game of the season, an 8-hitter, to beat Hideki Irabu and the Yankees July 20 at County Stadium...December 18, signed a 3-year deal with the Brewers.
1996
Won a career-best 13 games in his first full big league campaign...led Milwaukee in wins, complete games (3) and shutouts (1)...ranked 4th in the American League in run support (6.77 runs per game)...ranked 6th in the A.L. with 5 pickoffs...fanned a career-high 8 April 5 at Seattle and again April 26 vs. Seattle...recorded 2 of his 3 complete games in back-to-back starts September 3 vs. Cleveland and September 9 at Boston...gave up only 6 hits in his September 9 gem at Boston to notch his only career shutout.
1995
Started the season with Triple-A New Orleans, but was added to the Brewers' Opening Day roster on April 24...spent much of the season shuttling between Triple-A and Milwaukee, enjoying 3 big league stints...made his major league debut in relief May 4 at Baltimore...allowed one run on 5 hits in 7.0 innings in his first M.L. start July 1 vs. New York...got a no-decision in a 3-1 Yankees win...bested Oakland on July 6 at The Coliseum for his first big league victory...allowed 2 runs on 6 hits in 6.0 innings in the 5-2 win...needed only 98 pitches to post his first complete game, a 6-hitter, October 1 vs. Boston...lasted at least 6.0 innings in 14 of his 18 major league starts...went 3-4 with a 3.30 ERA in 8 Triple-A contests (6 starts).
