Five years ago, Mark Buehrle set a record by retiring 45 consecutive batters -- helped by a perfect game and a perfect 5 2/3 innings in his next start. You may remember this gem from the perfecto:
But during Thursday's Rockies-Giants game, Yusmeiro Petit surpassed Buehrle's mark. Having retired 38 straight, the reliever made a spot start for Tim Lincecum and retired the first eight batters he faced. The record-breaker came in the form of a strikeout.
Opposing pitcher Jordan Lyles would quickly end the new streak at 46 with a double, but still, pretty impressive stuff. How long will it last this time? And who will be the one to break it?
