Today in Postseason History: Nelson Cruz hits two homers, including a walk-off grand slam in ALCS

Today in Postseason History: Cruz hits walk-off slam

Think about the best offensive performance you can remember a player having during a seven-game series, and then remember that that showing lives in the shadow of Nelson Cruz's 2011 ALCS.

The Tigers and Rangers were supposed to play Game 2 of the 2011 ALCS on Sunday, Oct. 9. But -- after a 40-minute rain delay during Saturday's Game 1, the game was moved to Monday the 10th to avoid a repeat performance.

Cruz had hit a solo home run in the 3-2 Rangers victory in Game 1.  He followed that up with a two-dinger performance in Game 2. The second blast came with the game tied and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th. Yup, Cruz hit the first recorded walk-off grand slam in MLB postseason history.

He went on to crush three more homers in the final four games of the series, giving him six total in the ALCS. Cruz's performance set a record for most home runs in an MLB postseason series.

The Rangers went on to lose the World Series to the Cardinals in seven games. Nelson Cruz hit only two home runs in that Fall Classic. What a slacker.
